To the Editor:
After reading the account of the shooting in Red Oak in the paper I was astounded! What was this guy doing walking around with a legal concealed weapons permit? (CWP)
I am not stupid. Given his “rap sheet,” he more than likely would have been carrying with or without the permit. But, the fact that he had one with a rap sheet like that just utterly astounds me. How many others with sheets as long as your arm are legally carrying weapons?
It is my understanding that the sheriff issues permits. I know this as I have one. It is also my understanding that it is up to his discretion if he signs it or not. If he feels that the person is of unfavorable character, he does not have to issue the permit.
No! I am not down on the sheriff. I think he and his department do a great job. But, he may want to look over the permits they have out and use a little more discretion in regard to whom he issues them.
Not only does a concealed weapons permit allow you to carry a weapon, it also allows you to go into a gun store or gun show and buy any weapon there with no waiting period – just sign the registration form and you’re on your way.
As I said, I have a concealed weapons permit. Why? With people like Mr. Staley out there running around with legal weapons under their coat, “I’m too old to fight and too fat to run and I’ll do neither!”
