Lightning shortens meet at Clarinda

What started out as a mild, sunny Tuesday at Clarinda High School quickly turned into a dark, stormy evening as the girls Cardinal Relays was delayed midway through due to lightning.

The meet was ultimately halted following the 4x200 meter relay.

Essex, Red Oak, Stanton, East Mills, Southwest Valley and Griswold were able to post results before weather stopped the meet.

Red Oak

The Red Oak girls team had strong performances in the JV discus, JV 400 meter run, the varsity 400 meter run and the varsity shuttle hurdle relay.

In the shuttle hurdle relay, the team of Morgan Akers, Paige Shirley, Emily Petersen, Sydney Streicher finished in fifth with a time of 1:21.64.

In the JV discus Maddie Wendt came in fourth with a throw of 86 feet.

Katie Carlson won the JV 400 meter run with a time of 1:13.

Juhi Boeye had another strong performance in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:04 which was good for fourth.

Essex

The Trojanettes had strong performances in their usual events. Daiton Martin finished second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.49. They also got a second-place performance from Devan Gray in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 12:42.63.

In the 400 meter dash, Abbie Lindburg finished ninth with a time of 1:13.70, and Peyton Brammer followed with a 14th place finish with a time of 1:18.78.

In the relays Essex finished third in the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:20.44. The 4x200 meter relay team finished fourth with a time of 1:59.11. The sprint medley relay team came in sixth with a time of 5:11.26.

The field events saw two strong results from Keegan Nelson in the shot-put and discus. Nelson won the shot-put with a throw of 34 feet. She followed that with a third-place showing in the discus with a throw of 88 feet.

In the long jump Jescenia Mosley finished eighth with a jump of 13’9’’ and Kelsi Leninger finished with a jump of 13’6’’ which was goof for ninth.

Southwest Valley

Southwest Valley saw strong performances in the relay events. The 4x200 meter relay finished second with a time of 1:58.67. The 4x800 meter relay team finished third with a time of 11:49.48. The sprint medley team came in 12th with a time of 5:37.87.

In the 100 meter dash, Kaylea Wiechman came in third with a time of 13.82, and Kaitlyn Schad came in seventh with a time of 14.14.

Elizabeth Fuller had a strong showing in the 400 meter dash, finishing third with a time of 1:08.70. Hailey Thomas followed with a eighth-place finish and a time of 1:13.42.

In the 3,000 meter run Mazzy Hummel came in eighth with a time of 13:22.78, and Kendra Top came in ninth with a time of 14:05.45.

In the high jump, Morgan Shuey came in third with a jump of 4’10’’, in the long jump, Diana Berggren came in 11th with a jump of 13’1’’ and Miah Hummel finished 12th with a jump of 13 feet.

Stanton

The Lady Vikings found their strength in the field events Tuesday, as Chelsea Weis finished second in the long jump with a jump of 14’9’’ and Ally Focht finished fourth with a jump of 14’6’’.

In the discus, Devin Druivenga finished second with a throw of 94’1’’ Jody Vanderholm finished ninth with a throw of 71’ 3’’. In the shot put, Baylee Gibs finished 17th with a throw of 21’5’’ and Kelsey Walter finished 18th with a throw of 20’10.5’’.

In the sprints Ashley Reese finished 13th with a time of 15.27 and Baylee Gibbs finished 18th with a time of 17.10 in the 100 meter dash.

In the 3,000 meter run Nicole Graham finished 10th with a time of 14:43.31.

In the relays the 4x200 meter team finished with a strong third place showing and a time of 1:58..89. The sprint medley relay came in eighth with a time of 5:27.82.

East Mills

The Wolverines were led by strong performances from Janette Schraft, as she won the 400 meter dash and the 3,000 meter run. She won the 400 meter with a time of 1:03.23 and the 3,000 meter with a time of 11:21.89.

In the field events East Mills was led by Emmy Duysen who took sixth in the shot-put with a throw of 30’7’’ while Madison Williams followed with an 11th place finish with a throw of 24’4’’. Claire Huston came in 14th in the discuss with a throw of 63’1’’ and Cadance Blough came in 17th with a throw of 44’8’’.

In the relays the 4x800 meter team came in fourth with a time of 12:01.10. The 4x200 meter team came in eighth with a time of 2:08.32 and the sprint medley team came in ninth with a time of 5:29.37.

Griswold

Griswold saw strong performances in multiple events Tuesday. The sprint medley team came in second with a time of 4:43.63 and in the shot-put Mykenzie Rainey finished in second with a throw of 33’9’’.

In the 3,000 meter run Alisha Seyler came in sixth with a time of 13:15.49 while Joanna Topham finished 13th in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:17.71.

In the long jump Jeana Freund finished seventh after a jump of 13’11’’, Sydney Steffan had a strong showing in the discus with a throw of 77’5’’ which was good enough for sixth. She was followed by Naudia Jackson who came in eighth with a throw of 72’7’’. Steffan also finished fifth in the shot-put with 31’1.5’’.
