Local alums set collegiate milestones; Spangenberg and Subbert

Two local athletes, Red Oak’s Paige Spangenberg (volleyball) and Stanton’s Christa Subbert (basketball) have continued their success at the next level, paving their way through their respective college’s record books.

Saturday, Spangenberg broke the Northwest Missouri State Bearcat’s school record for digs in their 3-1 upset over 19th-ranked Truman.

Spangenberg needed 12 digs to break the record, racking up 25 in the win, putting her newly set record at 1,938 over her illustrious career.

In Saturday’s season finale against Missouri Southern, Spangenberg added another 10 digs, to finish her junior year with 1,948 career digs.

Subbert eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in the third game of her junior year with the William Penn Lady Statesmen, Nov. 2 in their home opener against Dana (Neb.).

Only 18 players in the school’s history have scored as many career points and none since Jennifer Chambers finished her career with 1,339 points in 1995. Becky Inman (1984-87) holds the school record scoring 2,139 points.

Subbert has averaged over 15 points per game in her collegiate career, scoring 399 points as a freshman and 551 last year.
