Mahoney scores 28 in loss to St. Albert

 RED OAK – Angela Mahoney picked a good night for a career performance, scoring 28 Tuesday in her final home game as a Red Oak Tiger.

Unfortunately though, it wasn’t enough to overcome a St. Albert team as the Tigers lost 83-65. 

Mahoney and Sierra Athen (24 points) accounted for most of Red Oak’s scoring, but St. Albert’s Paige Beacom stole the spotlight with a triple-double. The senior shot 13 of 25 from the field to finish with 33 points, adding 10 rebounds and 11 assists. 

Fellow senior Maysen Havener added 23 points and also filled the stat sheet with seven rebounds, seven assists and eight steals. 

The game started well for Red Oak as an Athen basket with five minutes left in the first quarter gave Red Oak a 9-6 lead. But after a Mahoney free throw tied the score at 10-10 55 seconds later, St. Albert scored the next 15 points to take a 25-10 lead. 

Mahoney and Athen combined for seven points in the first 90 seconds of the second quarter to cut the lead to single digits at 25-17. Beacom responded, though, with back-to-back baskets and Red Oak would never be within double digits again. 

Red Oak was back in action Friday, losing 50-36 to Atlantic. 

The Tigers’ offense struggled early, managing only 11 points in the first half. 

Athen and Hannah Vial led the team with 14 points each. Athen added a team-high nine rebounds and two blocks, while Vial dished out five assists. 

Red Oak (3-12) is back in action Tuesday as they travel to Shenandoah before playing at Creston Friday. Monday, Feb. 8, Red Oak plays a rescheduled game in Corning against Southwest Valley.
