Max D. Carlson, 87, died June 9, 2009.
Max D. Carlson was born Dec. 2, 1921 in Essex, the son of Emil A. and Effie (Nelson) Carlson.
Max attended Essex Schools and graduated with the class of 1939. During World War II, Max served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 as a left gunner on a B-29 bomber on missions in India, Burma and Guam. After the war, Max returned to Essex and was married to Lucille V. Johnson.
Max was an Essex Volunteer Fireman for many years.
Survivors include his children, Wayne (Cathy) Carlson of West Des Moines, Jeanne Ann (Jim) Weaver of Elkhorn, Neb., Rosalyn (Gene) Richardson of Adel, Juli (Roger) Johnson of Omaha, Neb.; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; brother, Bernice (Lenora) Carlson of Essex; and sister, Helen Mae (LeRoy) Johnson of Red Oak.
Funeral services were held on June 13 at the Faith Covenant Church in Essex with Rev. Jim Ressegieu officiating. Burial was in the Essex Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Weatherall-Hadden-Holmes American Legion Post #333 of Essex. Visitation with the family present was held on June 12 at the Kirsch Funeral Chapel in Shenandoah.
