McGreer Hawkins Park bridge signs damaged by unknown shooter

Information is being sought in regards to a recent vandalism incident.
Montgomery County engineer Karen Albert said the vandalism took place in an area well-familiar to the supervisors: the newly renamed McGreer Hawkins Park bridge.
“Approximately one week after the dedication of the McGreer-Hawkins Park bridge, 12 bullet holes were found in the sign on the west side of the bridge. On the east side, there was one bullet hole,” Albert said. “It’s disappointing that someone would be that disrespectful. I’m just so upset by this. Knowing the importance of naming the bridge the McGreer Hawkins Park Bridge was to the Coburg Historical Society and the history behind it, it was disheartening to find out someone would be so disrespectful.”
Albert added that the shooter had no business doing what they did to the new bridge addition.
“Signs are not placed on the road or bridge for target practice; this sign had a special meaning to residents in our county. The secondary roads department will be watching activity at the bridge more closely, and any evidence of damaging property will be turned over to the sheriff’s office,” commented Albert.
Making the situation worse, Albert said, is the fact the signs are not inexpensive to replace.
“The cost for the signs was $1,068. That’s just the cost for the signs and not the posts or the labor to put the signs up. The signs were purchased by the Colburg Historical Society. The Colburg Historical Society has been diligent in contacting our department since I was hired in April 2020 requesting the renaming of the bridge once it was replaced following the flooding event of March 2019,” stated Albert.
Because of the length of time it’s taken to bring the project to fruition, the fact it was undone in less than a week has upset a variety of people. Albert said The Colburg Historical Society has been notified.
Supervisor Bryant Amos urged anyone with information to share it to the proper authorities.
“Right now, there’s nothing we can do about that. But if somebody saw whoever did it, and they turned him in, we could. Somebody knows something about it. Somebody besides the shooter knows who did it, and I would hope they’ll come forward,” Amos said.
Amos and Albert said if anyone saw anything or has heard anyone talking about it please contact the secondary roads office at office at 623-5197, or the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at 623-5107. Any lead would be appreciated.
