WIS Celebrates National Library Week

National Library Week is celebrating its 51st anniversary April 12-18. The American Library Association sponsors this event each year to honor the contributions made by our nation’s libraries and librarians. April is also Library Media Month. The students and staff at Washington Intermediate School are planning their 2nd Annual School and Community Reading Party on Friday, April 17th, from 11:30-12:30 in Fountain Square Park. The national theme is “Worlds Connect@ Your Library” but WIS wants to add a local theme of “Help Bring CHANGE to our Library.” Students will have the opportunity this week to bring their pocket change from home and help fill the “Brick by Brick” jar. If WIS collects at least $100 during the week and from donations on the Square during their reading party, they would like to buy a brick for the RO Public Library’s fundraiser and have their school name and the date engraved on it.

Students will be eating sack lunches from 11:30-12:00 and reading from 12:00-12:30. Anyone is welcome to bring a lunch and eat with them or just read later on. Students will also read to you if you forget your book or would rather listen.

Last year, this event brought out approximately 70 guests plus our student body and filled the park quite nicely. We are hoping for an even bigger turnout this year. Of course, we are counting on Jerry Dietz to order great weather. Our goal is to bring school, family and community together to celebrate the contributions libraries and books make in all our lives, while at the same time help our local library with a brick donation.

Rain date will be April 23.
