Local youth take part in Red Oak football camp

The Red Oak Tigers football team held their youth football camp for all children between first and sixth grade last week.

More than 60 elementary children participated in the camp, hosted by Varsity Head Coach Mike Beason, his assistant coaches, and players who volunteered their time.

“Our main goal is to work on the basic fundamentals,” Beason said. “We want them to learn how to play the game and want the kids have a lot of fun out here.”

Over the three days, the campers were taught offensive, defensive, and special team elements of the game.

Coaches gave them pointers on everything from standing in a three-point stance to how to throw a spiral.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Tiger Football Camp attendee Carter Bruce said. “Today we get to tackle.”

The coaches used the same practice facilities that the varsity uses, including the blocking and tacking bags, running ropes, and kicking off the tees.

“We’ve been trying to do this every year,” Beason said. “We run it at the same week as our junior high and varsity are running their camp and getting ready for the season.”

The Montgomery County YMCA will be hosting flag football for any children between first and fourth grade.

Registration for flag football is due by Aug. 13.

The JVAA youth tackle football league is also underway.
