Stanton loses first game of the year to Sidney

SIDNEY—The Stanton Viqueens basketball team lost their first game of the season last Tuesday night to the Sidney Cowgirls, 40-35.

Sidney jumped out to an 11-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Stanton responded in the second quarter by outscoring the Cowgirls, 12-5 and taking a 17-16 lead at halftime.
By the end of the third quarter, the Viqueens and Cowgirls were tied 24-24.
Stanton kept close throughout the fourth quarter, but fell behind.
Kadie Subbert earned a double-double in the loss for the Viqueens, scoring 10 points and rebounding 14 shots off the basket.
Shelby Wagg came close to double-digit scoring, recording nine points.
Subbert’s younger sister, Carmen, and Rachel Sorensen, each finished with seven points.
Sidney’s Aimee Osbourne led all scorers with 17 points. Her 14 rebounds gave Osbourne the double-double.
Free throws made a difference in the game, as Sidney hit 19-of-27 free throws. Stanton went 9-of-19 at the free throw line.
The Cowgirls out-rebounded the Viqueens, 43-30.
However, Stanton won the turnover battle outright, as the Viqueens turned it over only eight times, while Sidney had 25.
Last Monday night, the Viqueens kept their streak going when they defeated Riverside Bulldogs in Oakland.
The big difference in the game came in the first quarter, when the Viqueens outscored the Bulldogs, 27-9.
Riverside matched them nearly point-for-point in the second and third quarter, but the Viqueens led 47-29 at the end of the third quarter.
Stanton’s offense clicked in the fourth quarter, when they outscored the Bulldogs, 18-9.
The Viqueens lost the rebounding battle, but won the turnover battle by a lot. Stanton turned the ball over five times, while Riverside turned it over 26.
Subbert finished the game as the overall leading scorer with 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-7 from three-point range.
Three other Viqueens scored double-digit points in the win over the Bulldogs. Ragen Anderson recorded 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
Rachel Sorensen made all five of her shots, as she scored 10 points.
Shelby Wagg also recorded 10 points in the Viqueens win.
Taylor Schoening was the high scorer for the Bulldogs with 10 points. Her 11 rebounds gave the Bulldog center a double-double.
With the split week, the Viqueens are now 8-1 for the season and 4-1 in the conference.
Sidney now holds a game lead over the Viqueens in the Corner Conference.
Stanton will return to action Jan. 7 when they’re home to face Fremont-Mills.
