Sheriff’s Report

Filed June 10, at approximately 2023, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a tan Buick Park Avenue that was traveling westbound on Highway 34. The vehicle had been travelling at a high rate of speed, had passed the caller, then went off the roadway and had struck a road sign. The caller continued on and observed the vehicle for sometime before losing sight of it.

The vehicle was located a short time later just north of Highway 34, on T Avenue, in the east ditch, facing northbound.

Upon arrival of the Deputy, the vehicle was found to be occupied by two males. The driver, Darryl D. Steeve, 46, of Creston, was asked to exit the vehicle. After doing so, he refused to exit the road ditch. After repeated instructions to exit the ditch and physically resisting the deputy’s efforts to extract him from the ditch, Steeve attempted to flee around the front of the vehicle, but fell and was eventually removed from the ditch and secured.

The second subject, Thomas R. Hanner, 55, of Creston, was transported to the Sheriff’s office after he was found to be in possession of prescription medication that he did not have a valid prescription for.

The beige 1994 Buick, owned and operated by Steeve, had sustained considerable damage to the front end as a result of the collision with the sign post at highway speed. The damaged sign was later located at the northbound exit ramp from Highway 34 to 71.

Damage to the Buick is estimated at $3,200 and damage to the sign is estimated at $350.

Steeve was charged with OWI first offense, interference with official acts and no insurance, accident related.

Hanner was charged with illegal possession of prescription medication.

Both were processed and held at the Montgomery County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bonds. There were no injuries as a result of the accident.

The deputy was assisted by personnel from the Villisca Fire and Rescue.
