Viqueens defeat Riverside after losing at home to Nishnabotna

STANTON — The Stanton Viqueens ended their week with a win against Riverside, in Stanton, 5-2, Friday night.

The win by Stanton snapped a four-game losing streak, dating back to the previous weekend at the Shenandoah Tournament.

Stanton jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning and stayed ahead the rest of the way.

The Viqueens had four hits in the game, but were walked eight times by Riverside’s pitcher. Rachel Sorensen, Macy Elwood and Carmen Subbert were each walked twice to lead the team.

Subbert and Elwood were both 1-for-2 at the plate with a run scored. Sorensen, as well as Kimber Wagg and Erin DeKay, also scored.

Ragen Anderson pitched the complete game for Stanton, picking up her second victory of the season. Anderson gave up two earned runs on six hits.

Last Tuesday, Stanton lost an extra-innings slugfest with the Nishnabotna Blue Devils. Nishnabotna won 9-8 in 10 innings.

A lead-off double, followed by a RBI single in the top of the 10th made the difference in the game.

Nishnabotna had the bases loaded at one point, but Stanton pitcher Roey Sink was able to retire the two batters and leave the runners stranded.

Stanton was able to get Macy Elwood and Carmen Subbert on base, but the runners were left stranded in scoring position.

Nishnabotna struck first with three runs in the top of the second to take the 3-0 lead. Stanton responded in the bottom half of the inning when an Elwood bloop to the outfield led to runs scored by Ragen Anderson and Sink. Stanton had a chance to tie, but a double play ended their opportunity.

Molly Goltz added to the Nishnabotna effort with an inside the park home run to kick off the third inning. The Blue Devils went down in order from there, but led 4-2.

Erin DeKay provided a rebuttal by hitting an inside the park home run of her own.

Following a Rachel Sorensen triple, an Anderson ground out was reversed to being a single, which was also an RBI. Stanton had the bases loaded, but a flyout ended their rally, thus leading to a 4-4 score.

Nishnabotna took a 5-4 lead in the fifth when a bad throw to second base on a stolen base attempt led to a run being scored.

Stanton's response was swift in the fifth inning when they posted three runs, thanks to RBI doubles by Wagg and Elwood, as well as a wild pitch. The Viqueens led 7-5 at the end of five innings.

Nishnabotna didn't go away, scoring two runs to tie the game, with two outs in the sixth inning, which led to them tacking on a run in the seventh and leading 8-7.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Wagg hit a double to put Stanton into scoring position. Following a Sink groundout, Elwood stepped up again for the Viqueens by hitting a game tying RBI single.

The game was tied 8-8 going into extra innings.
Elwood had one of her best offensive games of the season as she had a season high four hits and drove in four runs.

Stanton had a runner on in the bottom of the eighth, but were unable to score. Nishnabotna had a go-ahead runner at third base in the ninth, but were unable to capitalize. The score remained tied.
Wagg, Subbert, Anderson and Sink each had two hits for the Viqueens. Only Wagg, Anderson and Sink scored multiple runs.
