Sports Calendar: Starting the winter season

The 2012-13 winter sports season kicks off officially for many schools around Southwest Iowa Tuesday. Here’s a look at some of the sporting events taking place for Tuesday.

Bowling: Red Oak vs. Denison-Schleswig at Red Oak Lanes, 3:30 p.m.

The Red Oak bowling teams are back and look to make some noise with some new faces taking on leadership roles this season.

The key returners for both teams this season will be David Terry, Shelby Storesund, Casey Dykes, Hayden Berry, Maranda Myers Jayden Hilding and many more.

This will be the first home meet of the season for Red Oak.

Basketball Doubleheader: Red Oak at Griswold- 6 p.m.

For the girls team, Red Oak looks to start the season 2-0. To do that, they’ll need to get by Griswold.

The Griswold girls team has no shortage of returners for this season, led by seniors Jordyn Sindt and Cassidy Legg. Red Oak won the meeting last year, 60-31.

For the boys, it is the season opener for both sides. Returning players Tanner Johnson and Pete Walker will lead Red Oak as they face a Griswold team looking to avenge last season’s 52-32 loss.

Devin Bates leads the returners this season for Griswold. Bates averaged 17 points per game last season, third most in the Western Iowa Conference.

Basketball Doubleheader: Lenox at Villisca- 6:15 p.m.

It’s the final season for Villisca as they enter the whole-grade sharing agreement with Corning next season. Both Villisca teams would like to start strong in their first games with wins.

Villisca swept the doubleheader to open the season last year. Both teams field seniors with plenty of varsity experience.

For the Villisca girls, the seniors on the team have played together since before high school. Their season came to an abrupt end last year, but that won’t stop them from fighting for the Corner Conference title this season.

The boys season came together towards the end of the season, led by point guard Travis Herzberg, who averaged 17 points per game in the Blue Jays last eight games.

Girls Basketball: Stanton at Bedford (JV starts at 6:15 p.m. with varsity following)

The Stanton Viqueens face a tough task in Bedford Tuesday night. Stanton will want to avenge their 55-35 season opener loss from last year.

However, Bedford returns both Kayla Lindenmeyer and Savanna Thornton, among the senior loaded line-up.

Girls Basketball: Riverside at East Mills- 7:30 p.m.

Both teams are coming off tough opening season losses. East Mills lost to Shenandoah on Nov. 19, whole Riverside lost to Denison-Schleswig 45-35. Both teams would like to avoid the 0-2 start.

Basketball Doubleheader: Essex at Nishnabotna- 6:15 p.m.

For the girls', this will be a rematch from last week's Stanton Jamboree scrimmage. Essex is coming off a 58-50 win over Underwood Monday night. Nishnabotna meanwhile is coming off a 62-56 loss to Bedford.

For the boys', Essex looks to avoid starting the season 0-2. They lost Monday night to Underwood 61-32. They'll try to avoid the 0-2 start against Nishnabotna.
