Round Up: East Mills wins, Griswold and ESP lose

The East Mills Wolverines opened the 2013 football season with a non-district win Friday night against the Shenandoah Mustangs.

East Mills won the game 28-7, which took place in Shenandoah.

Colby Jennings had two touchdowns (one rushing and one on defense) and 236 yards rushing on 25 carries to lead the way for the Wolverines. Jennings scored his touchdowns on a 99-yard run, as well as a 62-yard pick six.

Josh Hopkins and Gabe Barney had the other touchdowns for East Mills.

Hopkins scored his touchdown on a seven-yard run as he finished the night carrying the ball eight times for 60 yards. Barney scored on a fumble recovery.

Logan Currin played quarterback for East Mills as he went 3-for-13 for 23 yards.

Lane Stortenbecker was the leading receiver, catching a pass for 15 yards.

Michael Story led the team in tackles with 12 total, three for a loss, as well as one sack.

East Mills will be home Friday night when they take on Clarinda Academy at 7 p.m.

East Mills won last season’s meeting against Clarinda Academy, 42-0.

St. Albert 58, Griswold 24

The Griswold Tigers lost their opener to the Saint Albert Falcons Friday night, 58-24.

Caleb Schaaf had two touchdowns in the game, one on the ground and one in the air. Meanwhile, the rushing attack of Kenneth Clary and Tyler Muhlbauer combined for 240 yards.

Clary led all rushers with 140 yards on 17 carries with one touchdown, while Muhlbauer had 100 yards on 13 carries.

Holden Ogg played quarterback for Griswold as he completed 7-of-12 for 200 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

On defense, Jordan Better led Griswold in tackles as he had 16 (12 solo) with one sack. Johnny Duggan also had double-digit tackles with 11.

Griswold will be home for two straight weeks, starting this Friday when they take on Nodaway Valley. The Tigers won last year’s meeting, 7-3.

Lenox 56, Essex/South Page 8

ESP is now 0-2 to start the season after losing to the Lenox Tigers Friday night.

Dustin Gordon had three touchdown passes and 182 yards passing for Lenox as they were able to pull away for good from ESP.

Caleb Lange had 113 yards receiving and two of those touchdown catches for Lenox.

ESP plays their third straight home game this week when they take on Coon Rapids-Bayard.
