Friday Football: 8-Man Week 2 Preview
It's week 2 of the high school football season. Here is a preview of all the 8-man district 8 games taking place Friday night.
Southwest Valley (2-0 overall, 1-0 district) at Sidney (2-0 overall, 1-0 district)
Two high scoring offenses face off in a game that could play a role in playoff seedings later in the season.
So far this season, Southwest Valley has scored 122 points, which is tied (with Coon Rapids-Bayard) for third most in the state. Only Lamoni and Adair-Casey have scored more points in the first two games this season.
Sidney meanwhile has scored 100 points this season, which is third most in District 8 behind Southwest Valley and Lenox.
The Cowboys are the defending district champions and they defeated both Villisca and Corning last season. They defeated Villisca 64-20 and Corning 44-14, last season.
The Timberwolves defense will have to contend with Chris Osbourne, who leads the district in rushing yards with 325.
Southwest Valley will also have their rushing attack to try and take on the Sidney defense. Zach Barton, Gunnar McCuen, Tyler Bissell and even quarterback Jordan Stuart will play key roles against the Cowboys.
The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
Lenox Tigers (2-0 overall, 1-0 district) at Stanton Vikings (1-1 overall, 0-1 district)- 7 p.m.
It's the home opener for the Vikings as they try to avoid a 0-2 start in the district. Stanton will try to put behind their 60-12 loss to Southwest Valley last week.
It will be just as tough this week as they host a Lenox team that has outscored its first two opponents (East Union and Essex/South Page) 106-10.
Last season, Lenox got the 56-18 victory over the Vikings.
Stanton's key players will be Cade Confer and Trevor Wood. Confer leads the team in rushing with 84 yards, while Wood has 59 yards on 10 carries this season.
Dustin Gordon and Dustyn Rauch will be the players to watch for Lenox.
Essex/South Page (0-2 overall, 0-1 district) at Coon Rapids-Bayard (2-0 overall, 1-0 district)
The road trip continues for Essex/South Page as it will be against a Coon Rapids-Bayard team that has scored 122 points in its first two games.
ESP lost to Lenox 56-8.
The player to watch from Coon Rapids-Bayard will be sophomore Zach Evans. Evans has 223 yards rushing and eight touchdowns thus far this season.
CAM (0-2 overall, 0-0 district) at Nishnabotna (0-2 overall, 0-1 district)
It's the first district game for CAM as both teams try to avoid a 0-3 regular season start. CAM has lost its first two games this season to Adair-Casey and River Valley. Nishnabotna meanwhile lost to Stanton and Sidney for its first two games.
Whitling at Fremont-Mills
The Knights are coming off of a bye and would like to forget about their 62-12 loss to West Harrison. Whitling lost in week 1 to Charter Oak-Ute, 81-50.
