Round-Up: Southwest Valley, Stanton fall

SIDNEY—The Southwest Valley Timberwolves lost their first game of the season Friday night as they fell on the road to the Sidney Cowboys, 30-26.

Southwest Valley (2-1 overall, 1-1 district) had a chance late in the game, but they weren’t able to take the lead. Jordan Stuart had three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing) in the loss. Stuart was the team’s leading rusher, carrying the ball 17 times for 133 yards. Stuart’s touchdown pass went to Nick Spring for 15-yards.

Zach Barton was the second leading rusher as he carried the ball 17 times for 81 yards. Gunnar McCuen had 74 yards on nine carries, while Tyler Bissell had a rushing touchdown and 33 yards on eight carries.

Southwest Valley will host Nishnabotna Friday for homecoming. The game starts at 7 p.m.

Lenox 64, Stanton 30

The Stanton Vikings have lost two of their first three games to start the season. Stanton (1-2 overall, 0-2 district) stayed close with Lenox early, but the Tigers pulled away in the second half.

David Sorensen had four touchdown passes in the game for Stanton as he completed 15-of-25 for 131 yards.

Cade Confer caught two of those touchdown passes, while Alex Becthold and Brady Johnson each had one. Johnson led the team in receiving, catching eight passes for 80 yards.

Kyle Peterson led Stanton in rushing as he carried the ball 23 times for 119 yards.

Confer, Peterson and Becthold were the leading tacklers for Stanton. Confer finished with 15, while Peterson had 12 (10 solo tackles) and Becthold had 11.

Stanton has a bye this week as their next game won’t be until Sept. 20 at Boyer Valley.

Griswold 41,  Nodaway Valley 20

The Griswold Tigers (1-1 overall, 0-0 district) picked up their first win of the season when they defeated Nodaway Valley in their home opener.

Kenneth Clary had 201 yards rushing and three touchdowns as the Tigers defeated Nodaway Valley.

Caleb Schaaf and Tyler Muhlbauer also ran the ball successfully. Schaaf had 91 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown, while Muhlbauer had 80 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.

Griswold begins district play this week when they host Underwood.

East Mills 61,  Clarinda Academy 0

The Wolverines are 2-0 heading into district play this week following their home opener win against Clarinda Academy.

Colby Jennings had 157 yards rushing and two touchdowns en route to the win Friday night. Jennings leads Class A District 8 in rushing yards with 393.

Logan Currin had three touchdowns (two rushing and one passing) and had 104 yards on 5-for-8 passing. Jacob Schafer also completed a touchdown pass in his only pass attempt for the game.

Michael Story and Travis Tupper both caught the touchdown passes.

In addition, Lane Stortenbecker and Matt Walliser also had rushing touchdowns in the win.
