Robert C. Huston, 81

Dr. R. C. “Doc” Huston, 81, Red Oak, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak.

Robert C. Huston, the son of Lee and Fannie Mae (Breezley) Huston, was born July 26, 1932, at Rockwell City. R.C. was raised in Rockwell City and, in 1950, graduated from Rockwell City High School. He entered the U. S. Air Force April 5, l951, serving during the Korean War.

R.C. and Betty met on a military base in Mobile, Ala. while attending a dance, and it was love at first sight. On Sept. 11, 1954, R.C. married Betty J. Rigby in Mobile. Together, they built a strong foundation of family values.

After R.C. was honorably discharged from the military April 4, l955, they moved to Ames. R.C. attended Veterinary School at Iowa State University, graduating in l962. Following graduation, they moved to Alabama where Doc practiced veterinary medicine until 1964, when they moved to Rockwell City.

In 1973, Doc, Betty and the family made Red Oak their home where Doc co-owned the Red Oak Vet Clinic until 1995. Doc and Betty moved back to Mobile for 10 years, returning to Red Oak in 2005. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Red Oak, the American Veterinary Medical Association and a past member of Alabama VMA and Iowa VMA.

Doc was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty, Aug. 28, 2011; a son, Daniel Huston; a grandson, Lee Huston; and sister, Lois Sullivan.

Doc is survived by four children, Dr. Pat Huston and wife Cindy of Red Oak, Kim Smith of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Dr. Mike Huston and wife Jackie of Jasper, Fla. and Cathy Nelson and husband Chris of Atlantic; a daughter-in-law, Kim Huston of Malvern; seven grandchildren, Este Peterson and husband Klint, Abby Simmons and husband Mitch, Chad Hill, Kyle and Ben Nelson, Jacob and Claire Huston; great-granddaughters, Audrey Jean Hill and Lydia Anne Peterson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Red Oak with burial in Emerson Cemetery, Emerson. Fr. Vern Smith will officiate. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday evening, Nov. 19, from 6-8 p.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home.
