2015 District Wrestling Preview

Several area wrestlers will compete Saturday for a chance to qualify for the state tournament in Des Moines. Here's a look at the area wrestlers and the bracket they will face. All district tournaments start at noon.

Class 2A, District 2

As of Friday morning, there was only one Red Oak wrestler qualified for districts and it was Tanner Mertz.

Mertz qualified for the district meet at 145 lbs. He won the sectional title last weekend at Harlan.

Mertz (38-6) will face Winterset's Justin Smith (24-22) in the semifinals. The other semifinal will feature Creston-Orient Macksburg's Joey Huntington taking on Harlan's Jacob Koke (11-12).

The 2A District 2 tournament will take place at Atlantic High School.

Class 1A, District 7

The East Mills Wolverines have the most district qualifiers in the area with six. Those six are Ben Christensen (120 lbs.), Alec Moorman (132 lbs.), Luke Stortenbecker (145 lbs.), Josh Hopkins (152 lbs.), Nick Perkins (220 lbs.) and Anthony Ossman (285 lbs.).

Christensen (33-12) will face Zach Ulven (43-4) of Westwood in the semifinals. The other semifinal for 120 features Bo Geise (40-13) of Logan-Magnolia taking on Shane Funk (36-17) of Woodbury Central.

Moorman (25-5) will take on Lucas Brouillette (35-14) of Westwood in the semifinals. The other semifinal features Lane Nichols (46-4) of Woodbury Central taking on Kaleb Reynek (20-11) of Logan-Magnolia.

Stortenbecker (33-11) will face Cody Zellmer (24-23) of Woodbury Central in his semifinal match. Meanwhile, the other semifinal features Drew Anderson (44-2) of Westwood taking on Brady Wilson (29-13) of Logan-Magnolia.

In his semifinal match, Hopkins (49-1) will face Tristin Stibbins (30-10) of Ridge View. Brady charbonneau (45-7) of Logan-Magnolia and Jakob Shattuck (29-16) of Westwood will be the other 152 lbs. semifinal.

For Perkins (39-9), his 220 lbs. semifinal match will be against Woodbury Central's Andrew Petersen (45-3). The other semifinal features Derik Via (33-10) of MVAO taking on Bret Blackburn (32-5) of Southwest Iowa.

Finally, Ossman (33-8) takes on gabe Shafer of Woodbine in one of the 285 lbs. semifinals. The other features Levi Paulsen (20-1) of Woodbury Central taking on Christian Jensen (25-18) of Logan-Magnolia.

The 1A District 7 district tournament will take place at Underwood High School.

Class 1A, District 2

The Griswold wrestling team has two district qualifiers, while Southwest Valley has one.

Hadley Ogg (120 lbs.) and Jacob Dickenson (152 lbs.) both qualified for Griswold.Tyler Bissell (160 lbs.) qualified for Southwest Valley.

Ogg (42-5) will take on Nathan Phillpis (19-13) of Interstate-35 in his semifinal match. The winner faces the winner of Ethan Rankin (25-16) of Riverside and Ben Freese (33-7) of Nodaway Valley.

Dickenson (27-21) takes on Logan Schumacher (45-2) of Martensdale-St. Marys for his semifinal match. The other semifinal at 152 features Audubon's Trevor Smith (39-8) taking on Blayde Baker (29-11) of Wayne.

Bissell (20-21) will face Jacob Hoch (52-2) of Southeast Warren. The other semifinal features Timmy Barr (32-8) of AHST against Sal Arzani (30-6) of Interstate 35.

The 1A District 2 tournament will take place at Interstate-35 High School in Truro.
