Trojanettes score big in win over East Mills

 MALVERN — In their only game of the week, the Essex Trojanettes won big over East Mills, 20-10, in five innings last Monday at the East Mills High School softball field.

The Wolverines tried to close the gap, scoring seven runs in the process, but it wasn’t enough as Essex got the win via the 10-run mercy rule.

Essex jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. They scored five more in the second and appeared on their way to knocking off East Mills earlier than expected.

The Wolverines scored two runs in the second and one more in the third to keep Essex from ending the game early.

The Trojanettes added six more runs in the fifth inning to take a 20-3 lead.

Essex’s offense was split between hits and walks. They had 12 hits, as well as 12 walks in the game.

Bethany Johnson had the only three-hit game for the Trojanettes. Johnson was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Amber Ohnmacht, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 with four runs scored.

Daiton Martin was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored. Sara Skalberg, the winning pitcher, was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk.

In the circle, Skalberg went 2 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on one hit, walking three and striking out one. The win for Skalberg was her fourth this season. The senior is 4-3 with a 4.09 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings pitched.

Jescenia Mosley went 1-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored. Devan Gray also scored three runs as she went 0-for-2 with two walks.

Kym Graham scored two runs as she went 1-for-3 with three RBI’s and two walks. Ciara Burnison went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Ausha Gay had an RBI as she was 1-for-3 at the plate.

Essex had other games scheduled for the week, but both were rained out. They were scheduled Thursday to play CAM, but that was canceled. 

Friday was supposed to be an Essex doubleheader against Fremont-Mills. That will be made up June 23.

The Trojanettes will be home all this week, starting Monday night when they hosted Lenox. Results weren’t available as of press time.

They’ll be home Thursday night as they take on Treynor. The varsity game starts at 6 p.m.

Essex will also be home Friday night when they take on Nishnabotna.

The Trojanettes wrap up the week Saturday with the AHSTW tournament in Avoca.

Lenox 18, Essex 0

The only game for the Trojans baseball team last Monday resulted in an 18-0 loss to Lenox in three innings.

Essex was held to one hit as the Tigers piled on 12 runs in the first inning and set the tone for the remainder of the game.

Dylan Buick had the lone hit in the game for Essex as he was 1-for-2 with a double.

Essex also had base runners as Ian Isaacson and Chase Hadden were walked during the game.
