East Mills sends 5 to district wrestling

The East Mills wrestling team had three individual champions and two other runner- up finishes to send five to this week’s district wrestling meet with a bid to the state wrestling tournament on the line.

Logan-Magnolia was the team champion at the Class 1A sectional at Treynor on Saturday, edging Missouri Valley 233.5 to 210. East Mills placed fifth as a team with 115 points.

The Wolverines, who dressed just six wrestlers on the day, had five qualify for Saturday’s district qualifier in Underwood. Luke Stortenbecker (145 pounds), Josh Hopkins (152) and Anthony Ossman (285) all won their classes to advance to districts. Alec Moorman (132) and Nick Perkins (220) both placed second in their weight classes to earn the automatic berth at districts.

East Mills finishes fourth in East Mills Invite

The host Wolverines crowned two champions and placed fourth as a team at its own East Mills Invite in Malvern.

Council Bluffs’ Thomas Jefferson, who had three individual champions, was the team champion with 178.5 points. East Mills finished with 122 points for fourth place.

The Wolverines had five wrestlers reach the finals in their weight classes with Luke Stortenbecker (145), Josh Hopkins (152) and Nick Perkins (220) winning individual titles.

Hopkins pinned Treynor’s Michael Deitchler for his 160-pound title. Stortenbecker and Perkins also recorded pin in the championship matches.

East Mills added runner-up finishes from Ben Christensen (132) and Anthony Ossman (285).

Wolverines 2-1 in quad

East Mills knocked off Griswold and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton and dropped a decision to Shenandoah in a home quadrangular in Malvern.

The Wolverines scored a 31-12 victory over Griswold and a 26-12 victory over Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton. Shenandoah knocked off East Mills 42-24.

“We wrestled well enough to win two duals and found a couple areas we need to tighten up before post-season gets here,” said East Mills coach Claude Lang. “If we can create more options for ourselves from the bottom position, it will improve our overall wrestling performance, as well as build confidence.”

Ben Christensen (132), Alec Mooreman (145), Josh Hopkins (160) and Anthony Ossman (285) all recorded three wins on the day.
