Southwest Valley hosts Timberwolf Relays in Corning

Thursday night Southwest Valley hosted 14 girls track teams from across the area in the Timberwolf Invitational. Shenandoah won the meet with 119 points, with Southwest Valley finishing fourth with 76 points.Griswold, Stanton, East Mills and Red Oak were also at the meet. Griswold finished fifth with 61 points, East Mills took seventh with 27 points, Stanton finished ninth with 22 points and Red Oak finished 11th with 16 points.Southwest ValleyHead coach and athletic director Mat Beu said that while running the event did impede his ability to coach his girls, he saw enough to know that some good things happened Thursday night.“We did some really great things tonight,” he said. Southwest Valley went into the last three events in second place, but only a few points ahead of Bedford and Nodaway Valley, but was jumped after those events.Beu said there some mishaps and scratches in events where the Timberwolves usually score points, but he was still happy.“The product was great tonight, and I thought the kids really fought hard for each other,” he said. “There’s some really good competition. This is a 14- team, un-classed meet so you get big schools and small schools and it allows you to compete with the best of the best.”Beu said the performance from Danica Sunderman in the discus and shot put, and Kaylea Wiechnam in the sprint events catapulted the team.Sunderman won the discus with a throw of 98’5’’ and finished second in the shot put with a mark of 31’7.5’’.Wiechnam held her own in the sprints, finishing third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.49.She also took third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.34.Elizabeth Herzberg had a great night with the two hurdle events. She won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:11.39 and finished second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 17.72.The 4x800 meter relay team of Hailey Thomas, Morgan Shuey, Diana Berggren, and Elizabeth Fuller took second to meet champion Shenandoah with a time of 11:23.35.Shuey also had a solid day in the high jump as she finished second with a jump of 4’8’’.GriswoldGriswold had a solid day as its usual suspects contributed points to the team.In the 800 meter run Payton Rush took third with a time of 2:42.54. She was followed closely by Charli Adams who took fifth with a time of 2:46.02.In the 100 meter hurdles, Jeana Freund finished fourth with a time of 17.93Adams also scored in the 3,000 meter run by posting a time of 12:21.06, which was good for fourth.Jessica Marshall took third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:15.91, while Mateya Peters finished in a tie for second in the high jump with a jump of 4’8’’.East MillsEast Mills got the majority of its points from the distance events and star distance runner, Janette Schraft. Schraft took second in the 1,500 meter run and the 3,000 meter run. She finished with a time of 5:19.26 in the 1,500 meter run and 11:12.44 in the 3,000 meter run, finishing second to Destiny Scar of Nodaway Valley in both races.East Mills also got points from Emmy Duysen in the shot put, when she placed fourth with a throw 29’4.5’’.The Wolverines had a solid showing in the 4x400 meter relay as well. They took third with a time of 4:30.96 with the team of Madison Williams, Zena Courtier, Duysen and Schraft. They also got points in the distance medley relay by taking sixth with a time of 4:56.17. The team consisted of Claire Huston, Duysen, Williams and Courtier.StantonStanton took ninth at the meet and was led by Ally Focht, who scored eight of the team’s 22 points.Focht took fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:17.20, sixth in the long jump with a jump of 14’.25,’’ and was part of the shuttle hurdle relay team that finished second in the 1:14.01.In addition to Focht, that team had Madison Franzen, Abbi Adams and Chelsea Weis. Stanton was also able to get points from the 4x200 meter relay team of Devin Druivenga, Ashley Reese, Adams, and Shelby Brockshus who finished fifth with a time of 2:01.48.Druivenga also got the Viqueens some points in the discuss, where she finished sixth with a throw of 89’5’’.Red OakDespite only scoring 16 points as a team, Red Oak had some solid results, especially in the sprints.Juhi Boeye, in particular, continued her great season with another first place finish in what is becoming her specialty race, the 400 meter dash. Boeye won it with a time of 1:04.68, which went along with her fourth place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.4.In total, Boeye scored 14 of Red Oak’s 16 points.The other two points came from Maysen Havener, who took fifth in a deep 100 meter dash field of 33 with a time of 13.52.
