He was transported to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital and later to a trauma center in Omaha.
• On April 29, at 11:08 a.m., Red Oak Police officers were called to a six-vehicle accident in the Fareway parking lot. David Howes, 80, Red Oak, driving a 2017 Toyota Sienna van, was attempting to park in a parking stall. According to the report, his foot slipped off of the brake pedal and hit the gas pedal. The Howes vehicle struck a 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse owned by Michael Nelson, Red Oak, which was unattended and legally parked. Howes’ vehicle then struck an unattended 2009 Toyota Highlander owned by Harvey Birkey of Red Oak. The impact knocked Birkey’s vehicle out of gear, and it rolled south through the Fareway parking lot, over the curb, and into the next parking lot to the south. The Birkey vehicle then struck a vehicle owned by Shari Wheeler of Hamburg, which was unattended in the south parking lot. The impact forced Wheeler’s vehicle into a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox parked next to it, owned by Chavis Wise of Red Oak. At the same time, the Howes vehicle struck a 1997 Chevrolet C15 pick-up owned by Tyler Jennings of Red Oak. The impact knocked the Jennings vehicle into a seventh vehicle, which left the scene before officers arrived. Witnesses at the scene told authorities the seventh vehicle sustained no damage. Howes’ vehicle was towed from the scene, and Nelson’s vehicle was towed by the owner. All the other vehicles were driveable. No citations were issued due to the accident occurring on private property.
