Red Oak’s John Erp reaches 100th wrestling win

The Red Oak Tigers came off of the winter break with a quad in Lewis Central Thursday, competing against the host school, Glenwood, and Shenandoah.
Team standings: Lewis Central 3-0; Glenwood 2-1; Red Oak 1-2; Shenandoah 0-3.
“I thought we did a good job battling some adversity,” Red Oak head wrestling coach Tiegen Podliska said. “Obviously, when you look at the forfeits, you realize we’re missing some pieces of our lineup right now. I saw a lot of fight in our losses; we might be out-manned at times, but we’re never out-fought.”
Tiger highlights of the night include junior Johnathon Erp earning his 100th win; and Justin McCunn defeating an opponent who beat him twice last year, once in the conference finals.
Rollin Dyer Tourney
The wrestling Tigers competed in the Rollin Dyer Tournament in Atlantic Saturday, ending the day in seventh place of 13 with 111.5 points.
Team scoring: 1. Sergeant Bluff-Luton 221; 2. Atlantic 218; 3. Grand Island Senior 188; 4. Humboldt 178.5; 5. Bondurant-Farrar 139; 6. Alta-Aurelia 117; 7. Red Oak 111.5; 8. Tipton 109; 9. AHSTW 88; 10. Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln 71; 11. Denison-Schleswig 21; 12. Southwest Valley 19; 13. Griswold 9.
“We took 10 wrestlers and five of them placed top five,” Podliska said. “We know we are a little short staffed right now, but I’m proud of the way the kids competed and didn’t let that affect them.”
Red Oak wrestling hosts a quad tonight beginning at 6 p.m. with Bedford/Lenox, Griswold, and Southwest Iowa competing.
Southwest Valley
“Rough start to the new year for Southwest Valley wrestling,” Southwest Valley head wrestling coach Cody Konecne said.  “The Rollin Dyer tournament was tough. But we’re not going to let this one determine our season. We’re going to use it to understand how to get better.”
SWV’s senior Teagan Lundquist was the number two seed in the 145 division. “Teagan tried to fight through sickness, but withdrew after the first round loss,” Konecne said. Bryson Rhamy was injured in the semi-final match, which hindered the consolation match, and he also had to withdraw.”
Southwest Valley travels to Audubon to compete in a triangular tonight beginning at 5:30 p.m.
