Volleyball roundup: Tigers capture title at Atlantic Invite
Red Oak was a perfect 5-0 on the day to win the Atlantic Invitational Volleyball Tournament Saturday.
The Tigers (8-1) notched wins over the host Trojans 21-12, 21-13, Grand View Christian 21-10, 21-14, Council Bluffs St. Albert 21-15, 21-19, Des Moines Roosevelt 21-15, 21-12 and Treynor 21-16, 21-17 without losing a single set.
Keely Jones led the Tigers’ attack with 55 kills on the day. Ellie O’Neal added 17 kills.
Ella Blackman dished up a team high 96 set assists.
Bulldogs sweep Essex
Essex dropped a home Corner Conference volleyball match to Bedford 25-16, 25-4, 25-17 Thursday.
Kalynn Moore led Bedford with 15 kills. Aniya Hardee had eight ace serves to go with 30 set assists.
Hamburg 25-24-25-20-15,
Essex 18-26-22-25-11
Hamburg edged Essex 25-18, 24-26, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11 in Corner Conference volleyball last Tuesday.
Paityn Vanatta led Essex with eight kills. Kinsley Robinette added four kills.
Millie Ripley paced Hamburg with four kills.
Stanton 1-4 at Glenwood
Stanton went 1-4 for the day at the Glenwood Invitational Volleyball Tournament Saturday.
The Viqueens (5-8) scored a win over Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson 21-15, 21-9. They lost matches to Underwood 21-11, 21-9, Bishop Heelan 21-10, 21-13, Underwood 21-19, 21-11 and Clarinda 22-20, 11-21, 15-8.
“Our team showed strong energy, battled through each match, and continued to grow together on the court,” said Stanton coach John Mainquist. “I was proud of their effort and teamwork throughout the day. We’re excited to take what we learned and keep building as we move forward in the season.”
Leilanie Foster-Saye led the Viqueens with nine kills on the day.
Haylee Joint directed the offense, recording 33 set assists.
Sidney 25-18-25-25
Stanton 14-25-16-16
Stanton dropped a 14-25, 25-18, 16-25, 16-25 decision on the road at Sidney in Corner Conference volleyball Thursday.
The Viqueens got off to a slow start in the opening set before battling back to take the second set, 25-18, but Sidney responded by winning the final two sets to secure the victory.
Addison Jones led Stanton with nine kills, followed by Cooper Stephens with six and Piper French with five.
Haylee Joint recorded 21 set assists to lead the Viqueens’ offense.
Defensively, Addie Peterson paced Stanton with 15 digs, while Stephens added seven and Addy Gettler had five.
Southwest Valley tops Wayne
Southwest Valley opened up Pride of Iowa Conference play with a 25-23, 24-14, 26-28, 25-20 win over Wayne last Tuesday.
“Serving errors played a huge factor in our game tonight,” said Southwest Valley coach Lisa Sparks. “However, a strong defense and great passing gave us the ability to put some balls away on the net.”
The Timberwolves finished with 45 kills while hitting an efficient .209.
Ray Helvie led the way with 19 kills and team high 22 digs.
Mailee Templeton added 10 kills and 18 digs and Elin Hogan dished out 31 assists.
