Daryl Peterson, 96

Daryl W. Peterson, 96, of Stanton, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at Vintage Park Assisted Living in Lenox.
Daryl William Peterson, the son of Rudolph and Hazel (Nelson) Peterson, was born Nov. 8, 1929,
in Stanton.
Daryl was raised in Stanton and graduated from Stanton High School in 1948. He entered the U.S. Army on July 20, 1951, and was honorably discharged on June 20, 1953. Daryl farmed with his father after his military service.
On Dec. 10, 1960, Daryl was united in marriage to Velma D. Ebeler in Omaha, Neb. They made their home in Stanton, and Daryl continued to farm until 1965. Daryl then began a career as a grain elevator manager. He managed the elevator in Clarinda from 1965 to 1970, before moving to Coin, in 1970, where he managed the grain elevator in Blanchard. The family moved to Sidney in 1976, where Daryl managed the Bartlett elevator until 1997.
Following his retirement in 1997, Daryl and Velma moved back to Stanton. Daryl was a member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church, where he served on the cemetery board for 17 years. He was a faithful member of Ernie Johnson Post #406 of the American Legion and the Swedish Heritage and Cultural Center, all of Stanton.
Daryl was an avid, lifelong gardener. His garden in Sidney, roughly half an acre, produced enough potatoes to feed the family for the year, along with sweet corn, sweet potatoes, asparagus, and more. He was also a capable handyman who did extensive work on the family’s homes, building cupboards and installing paneling. That he kept the garden and the house projects going on top of a six-day work week says a lot about him.
Daryl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velma, on May 17, 2021; his son, Kirby; and his brother, Rudolph Norman Peterson.
Daryl is survived by his two sons, Neil W. Peterson and wife Elena Melnikova of Antalya, Turkey, and Brian A. Peterson and wife Vicki Ward of Clinton, N.Y.; his brother, Larry Peterson of Laguna Hills, Calif.; and other relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service was held Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Mamrelund Lutheran Church, Stanton. Inurnment with Military Rites was in Mamre Cemetery, Stanton.
