Delphine Smith, 92

Delphine Marie O’Toole Waymire Smith, 92, Villisca, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center.
Delphine was born on Jan. 7, 1933, in Muscatine, the second child of Emmet and Dorothea O’Toole. Delphine graduated from Mercy College of Nursing in Iowa City in 1954.
She was united in marriage to Leland Waymire on Oct. 16, 1954, at St. Malachi’s Church in Ardon. To this union seven children were born, James, Leland, Kathleen, Diane, Dorothy, Stephen and Patrick. Delphine was a nurse for 42 years, of which 15 years she served as director of nursing for the Villisca Good Samaritan Center. Leland passed away on Oct. 25, 1987. Delphine later married William Smith on Jan. 18, 1992. She was a devoted member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Villisca. She organized meals through the Villisca Food Pantry; she was a member of Villisca PEO and volunteered at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center.
Preceding Delphine in death were her parents; husband, Leland Waymire; siblings, Emmett O’Toole, Patricia Butler, Mike O’Toole, Dorothy McKenney and James O’Toole; son-in-law, Reno Mueller; and granddaughters, Elizabeth Waymire and Annie Waymire.
Survivors include her husband, William “Bill” Smith of Villisca; children, James Waymire; Leland Waymire and wife Kelly; Kathleen Fisher and husband Will; Diane Mueller; Dorothy Berning and husband Greg; Stephen Waymire and wife Anne and Patrick Waymire and wife Lori; step-children, Shelby Grabinski and husband Tim; Bradford Smith, Creighton Smith and Stewart Smith and wife Katrina; 24 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Villisca, with burial to be in the Villisca Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2025, at LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Villisca.
