Dixie Wilkerson, 89

Dixie L. Ohnmacht Wilkerson passed over to God on March 17, 2025.
Dixie was born in Nebraska City on May 16, 1935, to Bernard and Mamie Ohnmacht. She had siblings, Donald, Sharon, Peggy, Richard, and Judy. She spent her early years on farms in the Red Oak, Coburg, and Northboro areas and attended schools in the area, where she played girls basketball and softball and earned an athletic letter.
In the early 1950s, she married George Wilkerson. Together they travelled and lived in many parts of the country but spent at least 20 years in Nebraska. Son James Wilkerson was born in Idaho, and another son died in a late miscarriage in Minnesota. Dixie and George eventually became involved in raising thoroughbred horses. Some were successful racers. Dixie and George spent several happy years working at horse racetracks. Dixie operated the photo finish camera and George ran the close circuit TV operations for several racetracks.
George passed away young in 1981. After that, Dixie in later years lived and worked in Las Vegas (15 years) and then returned to work at the Council Bluffs dog track and to live in the Red Oak area (15 years). She loved horses, dogs and antiques a lot! She was well liked, and she will be missed by all. Dixie was a wonderful wife, mother, aunt, sister and friend. Her family want to thank the care staff and administration at Glen Haven Village for their good care of her in Dixie’s final four years.
She is survived by her son, James; daughter in law, Marchele Kowalski; sister, Peggy Holloway; and various nephews and nieces, with a special notation for Bridget, Marcus and Andrea, and Amber.
Interment and a graveside service will take place on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak.
LeRette Funeral Chapel of Red Oak is in charge of arrangements.
