ACCIDENTS
• On March 21, at about 9:57 a.m., Red Oak Police officers investigated a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Broadway and Oak Street. James Coffman, 59, driving a 2000 Ford Windstar owned by America’s Choice Comm. of Red Oak, was traveling south on Broadway stopped at the red light at Oak Street. Maiah Caron, 24, Kansas City, was also traveling south on Broadway in a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu. According to the report, Caron, who was approaching the Coffman vehicle, did not know the light was red, failed to stop, and struck the rear of the Coffman vehicle. Damage to the Coffman vehicle was estimated at $3,500, while damage to the Caron vehicle was $5,500, a total loss. Caron was transported to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital because of possible injuries. There were no citations; however, during the investigation it was determined Caron had an active warrant for her arrest out of Clarinda. Once Caron was released from the hospital, she was taken into custody and later turned over to the Clarinda police.
• On March 26, at about 7:25 a.m., Red Oak Police officers were called to the alley behind the 700 block of E. Washington Ave. According to the report, the caller informed officers that the tow truck belonging to Douglas Klimek, Red Oak (Southwest Iowa Auto) was parked in the back yard of the house of E. Washington Ave. The driver started the vehicle the night before and then went back inside the house. While it was unattended, the vehicle rolled out of the driveway and struck a utility pole. The caller heard the vehicle strike the pole and saw the driver pull the truck back into the driveway. They didn’t see any damage at the time. The next morning, the caller discovered the electrical service was knocked off the side of two houses. Officers could see tire trucks from the utility pole back to the driveway, and there was minor damage to the front bumper of the tow truck. No one answered the door at the residence, and the owner of the tow truck was notified. Damage to the utility pole was about $100, while property damage at the two houses was estimated at $500 each.
