Accident Reports
On June 29, at 7:25 a.m., a 2002 Chevrolet pickup owned by John Everett, Jr., of Red Oak, and driven by Leanna Miner, 48, of Elliott, was heading south on Juniper Ave., about one half mile north of Hwy. 48, when a tire blew out on the pickup causing Miner to lose control. The pickup went into the west ditch and continued south until it struck a field drive embankment, at which point the pickup flew over the drive, landed, rolled and struck a power pole owned by Midamerican Energy. Miner and a passenger were transported to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital by Red Oak Rescue for treatment of cuts and abrasions. Damage to the pickup is estimated at $4,000.
On June 30, at 2:20 p.m., officers were called to the intersection of N. 7th St., and E. Oak St., for an accident. Upon arrival, a 1999 Ford Taurus driven by Byron Lee Moffatt, Jr., 71, of Red Oak, was facing east in the south side tree border of the 700 block of E. Oak St., while an United States Postal Vehicle LLV driven by Tamra Lynn Jackson, 51, of Essex, was facing north on 7th St., just south of the intersection. Jackson was apparently stopped at the sign at the intersection and stated she checked for traffic, did not observe any and proceeded into the intersection, attempting to turn left. Moffatt was proceeding east on E. Oak St., and was struck by Jackson as she drove into the intersection. Jackson stated Moffatt's car was in her blind spot and she simply didn't see it. Neither party was injured. Jackson was cited for failure to obey a stop sign.
On July 2, at 12:48 p.m., officers were called to an accident at E. Hammond St., and N. 3rd St., in Red Oak. A 2008 Nissan Altima driven by Margo Marcelle Woods, 23, of Red Oak, and a 1999 Chrysler Sebring driven by Ann May Gould, 69, of Red Oak, were both moved from the scene when officers arrived. It was determined Woods was heading south on N. 3rd St., while Gould was heading west on E. Hammond St. Gould stopped at the stop sign, then pulled into the intersection not seeing Woods and struck the left front of Woods’ car with the right front of hers. Gould was issued a citation for failing to yield from a stop sign. Woods’ vehicle sustained an estimated $4,000 in damage and was towed from the scene upon her request. Gould’s car remained drivable, but has an estimated $2,000 in damage.
On July 5, at 9:21 p.m., the Montgomery County Communications Center received report of a car in a ditch on Hwy. 34, west of Q Ave. The occupants were out of the car and reported no injuries. Deputies observed the purple 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier in the south ditch of Hwy. 34, about one half mile east of the intersection with P Ave., when they arrived on the scene. The owner and operator, Cassy J. Blystone, 18, of Red Oak, stated she was traveling west when another vehicle passed her and cut her off as they came back into the westbound lane, causing Blystone to swerve her car. She overcorrected and traveled south across the highway at which point the car left the roadway and became airborne for a short distance before hitting the ground. Blystone indicated she may have accelerated instead of braking at this point and continued southwest through the ditch. Blystone then attempted to turn around and exit the ditch, but became stuck on the elevated terrain. The right rear wheel had at some point broken away from the car and was lost in the ditch. There was not a clear description of the other vehicle involved in the accident. Damage to Blystone’s car is estimated at $4,500.
