Red Oak boys fall to Glenwood, Clarinda

RED OAK—The Red Oak Tigers basketball game against Tri-Center that was scheduled for Saturday night was canceled due to a snowstorm that hit Southwest Iowa earlier in the afternoon.

Friday night, Red Oak lost to Glenwood, 71-47 in Glenwood.

Red Oak lost to Clarinda, 61-37, Tuesday night in Red Oak.

Free throws played a key role for Clarinda as they were 21-of-32 from the charity stripe. Red Oak only went to the line 10 times in the game.

“We just have to do a better job of staying patient and working through those tough stretches on the offensive end,” Tigers Head Coach Brad Schlieman said.

Red Oak led for most of the first quarter, leading 8-4 at one point. In the three minutes, Clarinda went on a 10-0 run and led at the end of the first, 14-8.

Clarinda tried to pull away in the second quarter, but Red Oak had a couple of “and one” plays by Dakota White and Gustavo Rodrigues and closed the Cardinals lead to one point.

Clarinda again went on a run, 12-0 this time, to close out the half, leading 31-18.

Red Oak’s defense stepped up in the third quarter, allowing only nine points, but Clarinda still led  39-30.

Fouls became an issue for Red Oak in the fourth quarter, as both White and Johnson had four. 

“We had a couple of shots when it was a nine point game to start the fourth quarter,” Schlieman said. “Every time we missed a shot, we felt like we had to get it back all at once on the defensive end and it led to some dumb fouls. “

Clarinda outscored Red Oak, 22-7, to wrap up the game for the Cardinals.

White led the Tigers in scoring with nine points. Rodrigues finished with eight points, while Johnson and Andy Vial each recorded five.
