Red Oak coach suspended

RED OAK — A longtime teacher and coach at Red Oak High School has been suspended from his coaching duties indefinitely after an arrest last week.

Denny Redel was suspended without pay Sept. 13 as assistant high school football coach and head track coach, according to Superintendent Terry Schmidt.

Schmidt, who was out of town last week on vacation, said he will be meeting with Redel this week to review the situation.

“I don’t see any short-term plan where he will be returning to coaching anytime soon,” Schmidt said. “I believe we are all capable of making mistakes, but when we have a role model job, there are heightened stakes.”

Schmidt said he does not antincipate any changes to Redel’s status as a full-time, high school science instructor.

Redel was arrested Sept. 11 at 9:13 p.m. after a two-car collision left a Red Oak woman with minor injuries.

According to the police report, Redel was backing his 2003 Ford F150 pickup truck out of a parking place in the 300 block of Coolbaugh when he struck a 1999 Cadillac, driven by Steven Roby, 58, of Red Oak.

A passenger in the vehicle, Doris Ellison, 32, complained of neck pain and an ambulance responded to the accident. Ellison was treated by emergency responders at the scene, but refused transport to the hospital.

Redel was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated, first offense, and transported to the Montogmery County jail, where he posted a $1,000 bond.
