Red Oak cross country has multiple finishers at Shen

 SHENANDOAH — The Red Oak boys varsity team took sixth out of 12 teams competing at the Shenandoah Cross Country meet Saturday.

Red Oak finished with a team score of 167, putting them behind Glenwood. Thomas Jefferson won the meet with a score of 46.

“I wasn’t pleased with some of the times on the boys. I had a lot of guys in the 20s,” Red Oak Cross Country Coach Curt Adams said. “I got to have like Logan [LeRette] and Gavin [French], they’ve got to be in the 18s. We’re working on Weston [Rolenc] and Jared [Sherman].”

Josh Sunberg had the top finish for the boys as he took seventh with a time of 18:05.24. Sunberg had heat exhaustion after the race and was treated by Shenandoah medical staff, but he would be okay.

“It was definitely the humidity,” Adams said.

The humid conditions in Shenandoah created problems for many runners during the meet.

Sunberg was the only Red Oak boys runner in the top 20. Logan LeRette missed out by placing 23rd with a time of 19:03.56.

Gavin French finished in the top 40 with a time of 19:50.87. Weston Rolenc finished 49th with a time of 20:14.18. Ryan Dyson and Jared Sherman were 51st and 52nd with times of 20:25.64 and 20:28.96.

Travis Schon was the final finisher for Red Oak, running a time of 20:59.27, which placed him in 64th.

The Red Oak girls varsity team finished seventh out of 12 teams, finishing with a score of 184.

“The varsity girls had a pretty big day,” Adams said. “We had some awesome times.”

Paige Vannausdle andNikki Graber were the top finishers for the girls, placing 23rd and 24th respectively. Vannausdle ran a time of 17:19.43, while Graber ran 17:22.81.

Ellen Fellers ran one of her top times this year when she finished 34th with a time of 17:48.43.

Ashley Brower finished two spots back in 36th with a time of 17:52.45.

Chloey Taylor and Vanessa Pate were 67th and 68th with times of 19:30.55 and 19:32.14. Jordyn Cornelison was 71st with 19:54.40.

Adams said he wants the girls to work on their starts.

“It’s hard to crawl over those people,” he said. “I know they didn’t intend to start out slow, it kind of gets away from you too quick.”

Red Oak will be back in action Thursday when they travel to the Atlantic Golf and Country Club for Atlantic’s meet.

Griswold

The Griswold girls varsity team finished third at Shenandoah with a score of 92. Lewis Central and Abraham Lincoln edged them out in the standings.

Rebekah Topham picked up another individual win when she ran a time of 14:39.78, which is a minute ahead of runner-up Mackenzie Hulsing of SWI.

Alyx Flippin and Leah Lappe both finished outside the top 10. Flippin was 11th with a time of 16:39.68, while Lappe was 12th with 16:41.99.

Bridget Maurer took 31st with 17:39.96, while Alyssa Wyman was 37th with 17:54.78 and Kayla Kirchoff took 43rd with 18:08.33. Joanna Topham was the final finisher with a time of 18:45.93 to place 58th.

The Griswold boys team took 12th in the race with a score of 316.

Tyrel Peters had the top finish for the boys when he placed 43rd with a time of 20:03.40.

Jacob Maass was 56th with 20:41.37, while Dusty Meek took 59th with 20:47.89.

Joshua Turack had a 66th place finish with a time of 21:09.17. Grant Haynes was 78th with a time of 22:59.96. Joseph Turack and Taber Feltner were 80th and 81st with a times of 23:10.70 and 23:23.20.

Southwest Valley

The boys team for Southwest Valley finished 11th, while the girls varsity team took 12th.

Trevor Sorensen had the top finish for the boys when he placed 48th with a time of 20:12.96. Lane Peterson placed in the top 60 as he ran a time of 20:34.01, putting him 55th.

Garrett Newton was also in the top 60 as he placed 58th with a time of 20:45.62. Quintin Oldenkamp was 73rd with a time of 21:44.40. Quintin Wilcoxson was 75th with 22:03.08 and Connor Haggerty was 76th with 22:35.40.

Evan Baldwin was the final finisher for the boys as he ran 24:10.00 to take 84th.
