Red Oak downed by hot shooting Treynor

TREYNOR — The Red Oak Tigers girls basketball team lost Saturday night to the Treynor Cardinals, 71-33.

Red Oak trailed at halftime, 38-14. Treynor built on their lead through shots around the perimeter.  The Cardinals made eight three-pointers in the game against Red Oak.

Treynor was also able to platoon players in and out against the Tigers, every couple of minutes, especially in the second half. All, but one Cardinal player scored a point against the Tigers.

Tigers Head Coach Shelley Becker cited turnovers as being a big issue for Red Oak against Treynor.

“I don’t know that they’re having more players off the bench, coming in and out, had a greater effect than us making just bad choices of where we threw the ball and how we threw the ball and how we entered the ball,” Becker said.  “We’ve got to make better decisions. And until we make better decisions, we’re going to keep getting beat bad like that."

Kate Walker finished the game as the leading scorer with 17 points, 11 of which she scored in the second half.

Elise Gronhaug scored six points for Red Oak, while Gabi French and Grace Blomstedt each recorded four.

French was in foul trouble in the second half as she picked up her fourth in the third quarter.

Last Tuesday, Red Oak lost a close one to Creston, 42-38. Red Oak is now 3-8 for the season.

Monday night, the Tigers were in Carroll to take on Kuemper Catholic

“How do you improve decision making in two days time? That’s the question I posed to the girls,” Becker said in regards to the game against Kuemper Catholic. “It’s up to them. They have to start making better choices.”

Friday night, Red Oak will be home for the first time since Dec. 9 when they host the Atlantic Trojanns. Their last win was on Dec. 9 at home, against Clarinda.
