Red Oak falls in extra innings on road to Clarinda

CLARINDA — After leading for most of the game, the Red Oak baseball team lost 2-1 in extra innings last Tuesday at the Clarinda City Park to the Cardinals.

The first run of the game came in the top of the fourth inning.

Hayden Berry started the inning by reaching base and moved into scoring position.

A pair of bunt singles, one from Murphy Porter and the other by Nathan Guffey, led to Berry sliding into home plate and giving the Tigers the 1-0 edge.

Red Oak pitcher Jesse Taylor kept the Cardinals in check for most of the game, getting out of jams when Clarinda had runners in scoring position.

However, the Cardinals scored in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs to tie the game 1-1 and force extra innings.

Clarinda eventually won it in the ninth thanks to a game-winning RBI single.

Berry, Porter and Guffey had the only hits in the game for the Tigers. Both were 1-for-4.

Taylor was credited with the loss as he went eight plus innings, giving up nine hits, two runs (zero earned) and striking out five Cardinals. Berry pitched in relief in the ninth inning, but Taylor was responsible for runners on base.

St. Albert 9, Red Oak 2

The only other game for the week for the Tigers resulted in a loss Thursday night in Council Bluffs to the Falcons.

After taking the early lead in the first inning, Red Oak was soon tied and lost the lead to St. Albert, thanks to a run in the first and three more in the second.

The Falcons pulled away in the fourth inning thanks to four runs, making it 8-1.

Red Oak scored once more in the fifth inning.

The Tigers had five hits for the game.

Porter was 1-for-2, while Berry and Andrew Palmquist were both 1-for-3. Colin Bruce finished 1-for-4 and Mario Lepe had a hit in his only plate appearance as a pinch hitter.

Travis Schon scored one of the runs, while Brock Isaacson had the other.

Red Oak played in Creston Monday night. Results weren’t available as of press time.

Tuesday night, Red Oak is home for a rematch with Shenandoah. The last time the two teams played, which was June 2, the Mustangs won a close game 2-1. The game is part of a JV/varsity doubleheader that starts at 5:30 p.m. with JV.

Thursday night, Red Oak is home once again for a JV/varsity doubleheader against Kuemper Catholic.

The Tigers close out the week Friday with a JV/varsity doubleheader in Atlantic.
