Red Oak follows Griswold win with losses to Denison, St. Albert

DENISON—The Red Oak girls’ basketball team lost to Denison-Schleswig Friday night in Denison, 92-35.

The big difference in the game was the second quarter when the Monarchs outscored the Tigers, 40-14, which came after Denison took a 16-2 lead.
Gabi French and Blake Bergren combined to score Red Oak’s 22 of 35 points, with French leading the way with 12. Adrienne Mahoney finished the night with seven points after going 5-of-9 from the free throw line.
Thursday, the Tigers lost their first game of the season at home against St. Albert, 49-31.
The Tigers struggled on offense in the first quarter, with French scoring the only points. St. Albert had the lead for most of the first quarter and led at the end of it, 9-3.
Red Oak fought their way back into the game in the second quarter. Bergren scored all nine of her points in the second quarter, on three-pointers. Bergren’s three three-pointers in a minute and a half time span cut St. Albert’s lead to 13-12. Baskets by French, Andrea Miller and Jutta Hollt, gave the Tigers an 18-17 lead late in the second. A free throw late tied it up 18 each at halftime.
Both sides traded two points early in the third quarter, but St. Albert took the lead on a 13-0 run. The Tigers scored six points in the third quarter, but St. Albert’s lead stood at 38-24. St. Albert held on to their double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
Miller, Bergren and French combined for 27 of Red Oak’s 31 points.
Earlier in the week, Red Oak traveled to Griswold and defeated the Tigers, 44-32. French once again led all scorers with 20 points.
Red Oak was down early, but stayed close. The score was 11-9 after the first quarter. Red Oak outscored Griswold 16-9 in the second quarter, to take a 25-18 lead.
Griswold scored only four points in the third quarter, as Red Oak increased their lead to 39-22 by the end of the quarter. Griswold outscored Red Oak in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough as Red Oak won their second straight game. Rachel Northrup finished the night with 10 points, leading Griswold.
Tuesday night, Red Oak will play Atlantic at home. Then Friday night, the Tigers will hit the road to face Clarinda.
