Red Oak gets back in win column against Atlantic

ATLANTIC—The Red Oak girls basketball team scored its first win in 2013 by completing the regular season sweep of the Atlantic Trojanns Friday night 58-53.

The Tigers trailed Atlantic during the first half, down by eight points after the first quarter. Red Oak was able to pull it together in the second and cut Atlantic’s lead to four points at halftime.

Red Oak stayed close with Atlantic in the third quarter, but the Trojanns still had the lead 42-39 at the end of the quarter.

The difference was the fourth quarter when Red Oak outscored Atlantic 19-11. The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Tigers.

Kuemper Catholic 46, Red Oak 35

Red Oak started the week with a home loss to the Kuemper Catholic Knights.

The Tigers got off to a rough start as they trailed 20-8 at halftime. Red Oak fought back in the third quarter, getting the Kuemper lead down to seven points at one point.

Red Oak kept trying to chip away at the lead during the fourth quarter, but the Knights were able to hold them off and get the win.

Kate Walker led Red Oak in scoring with 13 points, including nine in the third quarter.

Grace Blomstedt had an efficient night of shooting from the field as she scored 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting and 4-for-5 at the free throw line. 

The sophomore forward’s 10 rebounds gave her a double-double for the night.

Blake Bergren scored six points, while Sabrina Guerra and Bailey Hankins each recorded two.

Red Oak will get the chance to be home for the next couple of weeks. It all starts Tuesday night when the Tigers host Clarinda. The doubleheader will be a Pink Out night.

Friday night, Red Oak will also be part of a doubleheader when they host the Glenwood Rams.

The last time these two teams faced each other, Red Oak lost by two points, 49-47, on Dec. 11.
