Red Oak held winless during early games
RED OAK — The Red Oak softball team is off to an 0-7 start following losses on Saturday as part of the Red Oak Softball Tournament at the Red Oak Sports Complex.
The Tigers lost both of their pool games to Griswold (12-3) and Essex (11-6) and then fell to Fremont-Mills (20-1).
As part of the tournament, the pool games had a 90 minute time limit.
In the first game for Red Oak, Griswold jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning and maintained their pace throughout the five inning game. Griswold tacked on two more runs in the third to make it 7-0.
Red Oak put three runs on the board in the fourth inning.
Bailey Hankins drove in the first run on a RBI single as courtesy runner Alexis Wingfield scored. Shelbie Perez started the inning with a single, followed by another single by Maranda Gowdy.
Gowdy scored the second run for Red Oak after a bad throw on a pick off attempt went into the outfield.
Hankins moved to third base as she scored the third run, thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Kendra Hardy.
Griswold tacked on in the top of the fifth with RBI hits from Hannah Willms, Hannah Misner and a double by Mateya Peters. Morgan Godwin also had a RBI-groundout, while Payton Rush knocked in a run courtesy of a sacrifice fly.
Griswold was able to win both of its games to ensure its spot in the championship game versus Shenandoah. Griswold lost in the finals 2-0 to Shenandoah.
In game two for Red Oak, the Tigers scored early, but the Trojanette bats got going.
The Tigers rallied to claw back, but Essex was able to stay ahead.
Perez was the only Red Oak player selected for the All-Tournament team.
Griswold’s Alyx Flippin and Brooke Hansen were all-tournament reps, as were Amber Ohnmacht and Seana Perkins for Essex.
Lenox 12, Red Oak 1
Red Oak fell behind early during Friday night’s five-inning loss at home to Lenox.
Lenox scored nine runs in the first two innings to take the commanding lead.
Red Oak had baserunners in both the first and second inning, but neither instances led to runs.
It was Perez who provided that run for the Tigers in the third inning with a RBI double, scoring designated player Belle Perkins. Perez was tagged out at third.
Red Oak was able to get both Tannah Halvin and Sarah Behrens on base during the fourth inning, but weren’t able to score.
Lenox scored three runs in the fifth inning to put themselves ahead by 11 runs.
Perez and Halvin both had multi-hit games for the Tigers.
Perez went 2-for-3 in the game with two doubles and a RBI, while Halvin went 2-for-2.
Fremont-Mills 15, Red Oak 10
Red Oak kicked off the 2014 season with a loss last Monday to Fremont-Mills.
The Tigers were able to jump out to a 2-1 lead after the first inning and traded leads with the Knights several times.
Fremont-Mills scored two runs in the second to take a 3-2 lead.
It didn’t last long as Red Oak posted four in the third inning to take a 6-3 lead.
The Knights scored two runs in the fourth and fifth inning to lead 7-6. Red Oak responded with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth to take an 8-7 lead.
Fremont-Mills took charge in the sixth inning, scoring six runs. They also scored two runs in the seventh.
Red Oak was able to score two runs in the sixth.
Hankins scored the most runs for Red Oak with three.
Three players had multi-hit games for Red Oak, most notably Perez, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored, a stolen base and four runs batted in.
Behrens also had a 2-for-4 night with a run scored and another run knocked in.
Sydnee Esaias had a 2-for-2 day with a run scored, one RBI and one stolen base.
Gowdy went 1-for-4 and scored two runs for the Tigers, while both Sydney Streicher and Perkins each scored a run.
Red Oak also played a doubleheader versus Atlantic last Thursday, but lost 10-, and 12-0.
Red Oak was back in action Monday night versus Shenandoah, but results weren’t available as of press time.
Tuesday, they’ll be home to play Glenwood for a JV/Varsity doubleheader that starts at 4:30 p.m.
