Red Oak sets up for H-10 cross country meet
ATLANTIC — Both Red Oak varsity cross country teams finished outside the top 10 at Thursday’s jam-packed Atlantic Cross Country meet at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club.
The boys finished 11th, while the girls finished 18th. Both races had 21 teams represented.
Josh Sunberg had the best finish for the boys team when he ran a time of 17:08.90 to place 15th. Sunberg finished nearly a minute ahead of his previous race time, which was 18:05 at Shenandoah.
Logan LeRette had the next top time for the Tigers when he ran 17:19.50 to place 25th, which was a nearly two-minute improvement from the 19:03 he ran at Shenandoah.
Both Sunberg and LeRette were the lone Red Oak boys runners in the top 50.
Nikki Graber had the top finish for the girls when she ran a time of 17:52.21 to place 49th. Ashley Brower had the next finish for Red Oak as she took 70th with a time of 18:14.06.
Other boys varsity finishers for Red Oak include Gavin French, who ran 18:08 to place 60th, as well as Weston Rolenc, who finished 89th with a time of 18:47.
Additionally, Ryan Dyson took 113th with a time of 19:24, while Jared Sherman was 130th with 20:12. Lyndon Bright, who made his varsity debut for Red Oak, finished 133rd with a time of 20:17.
Additional finishers for the Red Oak girls include Ellen Fellers, who took 110th with a time of 19:13. Jordyn Cornelison was 133rd with 19:58. Vanessa Pate placed 135th with a time of 20:07. Hannah Shalters took 147th with 21:13 and Sydney Straw was 150th with a time of 22:20.
The postseason kicks off this week for Red Oak when they host the Hawkeye 10 meet Thursday. The meet takes place at the Red Oak Country Club starting at 4 p.m.
Griswold
The Griswold girls finished ninth at the Atlantic meet on Thursday.
Rebekah Topham won another title as she ran a time of 14:34.37, beating out Madison Waymire of Dallas Center-Grimes by more than a minute.
Only one other Griswold runner placed in the top 20 and that was Leah Lappe, who placed 18th with a time of 16:50.75.
The next Griswold finisher didn’t pop in until 54th place when Bridget Maurer ran a time of 18:01.50. Alyssa Wyman wasn’t far behind as she ran 18:04 to place 57th.
Kayla Kirchoff ran a time of 19:12 to place 109th, while Jeana Freund ran 19:14 to place 112th.
Dani Kentner placed 117th with a time of 19:21.
The boys team placed 18th at the Atlantic meet, ahead of Clarinda, Treynor and Sergeant-Bluff Luton.
Jacob Maass had the top boys finish by taking 64th with a time of 18:15. Tyrel Peters was the only other Griswold runner in the top 100 when he placed 87th with a time of 18:45. Dusty Meek took 107th with a time of 19:20, while Joshua Turack ran 19:24 to place 114th.
Grant Haynes was 131st with 20:15 and Joseph Turack was 143rd with 21:07.
Griswold got back to action Monday when they competed at the Western Iowa Conference meet in Treynor. Results weren’t available as of press time.
Red Oak junior varsity
The Red Oak boys junior varsity team was able to record some top finishes as they placed sixth out of 15 teams.
Travis Schon had the top finish for the boys by running 18:41 to take 11th. Schon improved on his time from Shenandoah by more than two minutes.
Justin Bernard also had a top 50 finish as he took 34th with a time of 19:57.
Sean Griffen missed out on the top 50, placing 52nd with a time of 20:24. Nate Schon was 60th with a time of 20:36. Rob Vial was the only other Red Oak junior varsity boys runner in the top 100 as he took 71st with a time of 20:55.
Hayden Berry ran a time of 21:45 to place 110th, while Chris Allison was 133rd with a time of 22:46. Donnie Torbett placed 171st with a time of 32:47.
The junior varsity girls had three runners. Margaux Millett had the top finish when she placed 97th with a time of 22:21. Johanna Wessel was 121st with a time of 23:54 and Erica Sherman placed 127th with a time of 25:14.
Middle school results
The boys middle school team had three runners at the Atlantic meet. Taylor Smith had the best time, running 15:02 to place 42nd. Jacob Cashatt was 46th with a time of 15:09. Jake Sellers was the final finisher as he took 78th with a time of 16:19.
The Griswold middle school team had three runners compete, as well. Chance Mace had the top time as he ran 13:26. Evan Kelly was 21st with a time of 13:55 and Josh Brownlee placed 45th with a time of 15:08.
For the girls, Red Oak had one runner as Abigail Sherman ran a time of 17:03 to place 70th.
The Griswold girls were also represented as Karysn Rush placed eighth with a time of 14:22.
Anna Young missed out on the top 10 as she took 11th with a time of 14:56. Charli Adams took 56th with a time of 16:21 and Cynthia Whitehill was 80th with a time of 17:42.
