Red Oak softball has four game winning streak

CRESTON— The Red Oak Tigers softball team won both of their games Saturday at the Creston Tournament

The team defeated Mount Ayr, 4-1 and Nodaway Valley 13-7.
Paige Stoaks had a big game against Mount Ayr as she was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and a run batted in. Makelti White and Lexie Holmgren scored the other runs for Red Oak.

Maddie Holmgren pitched the complete game against Mount Ayr. Holmgren gave up one earned run on three hits and struck out seven.

Against Nodaway Valley, Red Oak trailed 6-4 after two innings, but immediately pulled ahead thanks to a four-run third inning. The Tigers piled on the runs from there.

Gabi French had a big game against Nodaway Valley as she was 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and four runs batted in.

Stoaks and Lexie Holmgren were both 2-for-3 at the plate. Stoaks scored two runs, while Holmgren scored a run and drove in three more.

Red Oak Tigers picked up a win during the Creston Tournament Friday afternoon.

Red Oak’s win came against the Griswold Tigers, 7-0. Tigers pitcher Maddie Holmgren pitched a two-hit shutout to get the win. The Tigers got production out of several hitters, including Lexie Holmgren, who was 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and a run scored. Stoaks was 1-for-2 at the plate as she had a triple, scored a run and knocked in two more.

White was 1-for-2 with two runs batted in and Bailey Hankins was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in.

Thursday night, the Tigers split a doubleheader versus Lewis Central. They lost the first game 8-1, but won game two 5-4. Maddie Holmgren pitched both games for the doubleheader, pitching a complete game in both instances. In game two though, she gave up just three earned runs and struck out four batters in the process.

Stoaks was 4-for-6 during the doubleheader as she hit her first home run of the season. Stoaks also had two doubles and scored three runs. Gabi French also hit a home run during the doubleheader, it would be her third of the season.

Hankins was 2-for-5 during the doubleheader with a double, a run scored and a run batted in.

Red Oak had another win last Wednesday when they defeated Corning, 4-3, in Corning.

Corning. Red Oak jumped out to a 4-0 lead and was able to hold off Corning to get the win. Corning scored their three runs in the fifth and sixth inning.

French and Stoaks were each 1-for-4 with a hit and a run scored. Stoaks was also one of three batters to record a stolen base in the game.

Maddie Holmgren and Quinn Sheldon had the other hit in the game for Red Oak.

Holmgren once again pitched the complete, giving up three earned runs on six hits and striking out six.

Last Tuesday, Red Oak lost 4-3 to Shenandoah at home. The Tigers trailed 4-1 at one point, but were able to score two runs in the sixth to cut down on the lead.

Last Monday, Red Oak lost to Glenwood 13-0 after five innings. Red Oak was held to two hits in the game, one my Maranda Gowdy and the other by Quinn Sheldon.

The Tigers were in action Monday night against Creston as they put their four-game winning streak on the line. However, results weren’t available as of press time. Wednesday night, they’ll be home to face Abraham Lincoln.

Red Oak headed into the game with a 9-11 record.

They’re on the road again Thursday night to play Atlantic.
