Red Oak softball starts season with 0-2 record

LENOX —The Red Oak softball team is 0-2 to start the season after non-conference losses last week.

Their most recent loss came last Friday when Red Oak lost to Lenox on the road, 8-4.

The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Lenox scored in the second inning, but Red Oak held the lead for several more innings.

Lenox rallied to score six runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead.

Red Oak scored two runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.

Makelti White and Angela Mahoney both had multi-hit games for Red Oak.

White was 2-for-3 with one run scored and one stolen base, while Mahoney was 2-for-3 with a run scored, one run driven in and a stolen base.

Dana Marsden and Bailey Hankins scored the other runs for the Tigers.

Maddie Holmgren pitched the game for Red Oak as she gave up eight runs (none earned) on three hits and struck out nine batters in six innings of work.

Fremont-Mills 14, Red Oak 6

Red Oak began their season May 20 with a 14-6 loss to Fremont-Mills in Tabor.

The difference in the game was the eight runs scored in the fourth inning by Fremont-Mills, which game them a nine run lead.

Red Oak was able to score runs to prevent Fremont-Mills from winning via the 10-run rule.

The Tigers recorded four hits in the game. Holmgren led the way for Red Oak by going 1-for-4 with two runs scored and one more batted in.

Holmgren pitched the game for Red Oak as she went six innings, giving up 14 runs (four earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts.

Hankins, as well as Shelbie Perez had the other hits for Red Oak.

Sarah Behrens, in her varsity debut, finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs batted in.

Red Oak was originally scheduled to host their tournament last Saturday. However, inclement weather canceled the tournament.

The Tigers were in action Tuesday night against Denison-Schleswig in a doubleheader. Results weren’t available as of press time.

Wednesday, the Tigers take part in a triangular against Essex and Exira-EHK. The triangular starts at 3 p.m. at Elk Horn Kimballton High School.

Thursday, the Red Oak girls are back on the road again as they face off against Glenwood. The first pitch is expected to take place at 7 p.m. at Glenwood High School.

Finally on Saturday, Red Oak heads to Atlantic to compete in the Varsity Trojann Softball Tournament.

Schools competing there include A-H-S-T, Glenwood, Treynor, Creston, Underwood, Walnut, Audubon and Tri-Center.

The tournament begins at 8 a.m.
