RO wrestling sweeps home quad; seven Tigers go 3-0
The weather prohibited the Red Oak wrestling team from competing in the ADM wrestling tournament in Adel on Saturday, but the Tigers still had a busy week of wrestling beginning with the JV Tiger wrestlers at a tournament last Monday, Jan. 7, in Creston, and ending with a home quad on Thursday.
“We took a pair of wrestlers to Creston, and the two young men put on a fairly dominant performance,” Red Oak assistant wrestling coach Nathan Rouse said.
Chase Sandholm went 2-0 with two pins for first place; James Kelly went 3-0 with two pins for first place.
“Both wrestlers recorded a pair of first-period pin-falls,” Rouse said. “Despite the results, both of them understand that there is still much work to do in order to reach our best selves and there are many steps to take still.”
Home quad
Red Oak wrestling has won 12 matches this season after going 3-0 in the home quad with Bedford/Lenox, Griswold, and Southwest Iowa Tuesday, Jan. 8.
Bedford/Lenox went 2-1; Southwest Iowa 1-2; and Griswold 0-3.
“We bumped up our first three guys so that we could cover more weights and it paid off,” Red Oak head coach Tiegen Podliska said of the Griswold match. “Bryan Erp could have taken a forfeit at 126, but instead, he wanted to challenge himself and get a match in a weight class up. He didn’t end up on the right end of it, but he did a lot of good things, and I’m particularly proud of his effort.”
Red Oak went 4-1 in contested matches against Griswold; 6-0 in contested matches against Southwest Iowa; and 4-2 in contested matches against Bedford/Lenox.
Red Oak will host a quad on Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Griswold
Griswold grapplers were led by Zane Vance and Jackson Sheeder, who were the only two to win a contested match for the Tigers.
Zane Vance went 1-2 with one fall; Jackson Sheeder went 2-1 with one fall; Seth Butler went 1-2; Jacob Taylor went 1-0; Brandon Bellmyer went 1-0; Colton Turner went 0-3; Sam Olson went 0-2.
Vance defeated Bryan Erp of Red Oak by fall (4:54). Jackson Sheeder defeated Chance Roof of SWI by fall (1:49) and won by forfeit over Bedford/Lenox.
Griswold’s home tournament scheduled for Saturday was cancelled due to the weather. The Tigers compete next on Friday at the John J. Harris meet in Corning at 4 p.m.
