Rock scavenger hunt in Red Oak next week

 With numerous Halloween events being cancelled due to COVID-19, a group of Southwest Iowa volunteers has found a way to continue rockin’ with a painted Halloween Scavenger Hunt.

The Kindness Rock Project, a treasure hunt of sorts for all ages, started in 2015 on Cape Cod. Since then, the project has spread throughout the United States, including Page, Fremont, Mills and Montgomery Counties.

The purpose of the project is to paint encouraging messages or images on rocks and then place the rocks for people to find. Located on the bottom of the rock is the name of the Facebook group that left the rock. The person that found the rock can get on Facebook, join that particular group, and post a picture of the rock they found. The rock can then be kept or hidden elsewhere.

For the Halloween Scavenger Hunt, the two FB rock groups in Southwest Iowa; SWI Rocks and Clarinda Rocks, will be participating in this year’s event. Groups of volunteers will place a painted rock, pirate token and a memo in a baggie and hide it. The memo gives the information on what Facebook page to visit in order to share what was found. Bags will be hidden in Glenwood from Oct. 14-20; Red Oak from Oct. 9-13; Farragut and Riverton from Oct. 21-25; Hamburg, Sidney and Tabor from Oct. 25-30. Shenandoah and Clarinda’s hunt ended Oct. 8.
