ROFD hosts open house Sunday

The Red Oak Fire Department will hold its annual open house breakfast from 9 a.m to1 p.m. Sunday at the fire station.

The event is part of Fire Prevention Week and will feature an awards ceremony at noon. Other activities during the week for the fire department will include visits to schools and residential facilities, according to Chief John Bruce.

The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “Don’t wait – check the date! Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.” It’s the last of a three-year effort to educate the public about basic, but essential, elements of smoke alarm activity. 

“The focus is due to the National Fire Protection Association’s survey data showing that the public has many misconceptions about smoke alarms, which may put them at an increased risk in the event of a home fire,” a press release said. “one of those survey findings shows that only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are or how often they need to be replaced.”

The release said:

• Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.

• Make sure you know the age of the smoke alarms in your home.

• To learn how old the alarm is, check the manufacturing date on the back of it.

Contributions sought

The fire department is seeking contributions to continue to equip and maintain its operation.
