Ronald Newman, 75

Ronald J. Newman, 75, Stanton, died Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital.

Ronald John Newman, the son of Garfield and Edna (Niemann) Newman was born March 28, 1938, in Shenandoah. Ron was a confirmed member of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton. After graduating from Stanton High School in l956, he served in the U.S. Army.

Ron was united in marriage to Mildred “Millie” Eileen Bangs Aug. 10, 1962, in Farragut, and to this union three daughters were born, Wendy, Mindy and Heidi.
Ron was in the upholstery business for many years and worked for Johnson Brothers doing construction and carpentry work. Before retiring, he worked at Hawkeye Ford.

Ron and Millie lived their entire married life in the Red Oak and Stanton area. Ron enjoyed roller skating, bowling and square dancing with his wife. He also made many memories with family and friends fishing, camping, gardening, wood carving and driving the “Covered Wagon” on the Oregon Trail at Anderson Conservation Center the past few years.

Ron became involved in 4-H and was the Montgomery County Fair Rabbit Superintendant for several years; he also supported Mindy and Heidi with their FFA activities. As the girls grew up and had families of their own, he was still busy in their lives, always helping. He became the babysitter, chauffer, after school club, “fixer-upper-make-it-work guy” and Rascal Grandpa who was loved and will be missed by all. Ron enjoyed staying busy and spending time with his wife, girls, son-in-laws, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Garfield and Edna; and grandson, Cody Gilliland in 1989.

Ron is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mildred “Millie” Newman of Stanton; three daughters, Wendy (Ken) Confer of Stanton, Mindy (Jake) Wookey of Red Oak, and Heidi (Brad) Bader of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Cassie (Carlos) Williams of Clarinda, Cade and Marcel Confer of Stanton, Madison, Mallorie and Jonan Wookey of Red Oak, Joshua and Carson Bader of Cedar Rapids; two great-grandchildren, Cailex and Cylin Williams of Clarinda; a sister, Garnet (Kirk) Requist of Stanton; a brother, John (Julie) Newman of Stanton; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 26, at 10 a.m. at Mamrelund Lutheran Church, Stanton. Burial will follow in the Mamre Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Eric Kutzli officiating.

Visitation with the family present will be Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Mamrelund Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be directed to Stanton Fire and Rescue, Mamrelund Lutheran Church, Montgomery County Fair or donor’s choice.
