Round-Up: Griswold gets shutout win
The Griswold Tigers secured their first shutout of the season when they defeated West Monona in Onawa Friday night, 48-0.
Kenneth Clary had 156 yards rushing and three touchdowns, including one that went for 60-yards, to lead Griswold (4-2 overall, 3-1 district) to their second highest point total this season. Tyler Muhlbauer had two touchdowns rushing and 70 yards.
Caleb Schaaf finished the game with 48 yards on eight carries with one touchdown.
Schaaf also had a defensive touchdown as he returned an interception 30 yards for the score.
Josh Metheny was the leading tackler for Griswold, recording 14, including seven solo. Collin Fast was the only other Tiger to have double-digit tackles as he finished with 10.
The Tigers sit third in the district, behind Logan-Magnolia and Underwood.
They have won three straight games. They will go for their fourth straight Friday night at home when they play Riverside.
Underwood 28, East Mills 19
The East Mills Wolverines fell to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the district after losing to second place Underwood Friday night.
The Wolverines took an early lead, but Underwood rallied to get the win and possibly secure their spot in the playoffs.
East Mills scored all of their touchdowns via rushing.
Nick Pittmon had two touchdowns as he had 91 yards on five carries, including a touchdown run of 83 yards. Caleb Barney finished over the 100-yard rushing mark, carrying the ball 15 times for 126 yards and one touchdown that went for 88-yards.
Colby Jennings finished with 19 yards rushing, while Lane Stortenbecker had nine yards.
Defensively, Michael Story was the leading tackler for East Mills, recording 17 for the game, including 10 solo. Jud Magers and Austin Sommerla both had double-digit tackles as Magers had 12 and Sommerla 11.
East Mills sits fifth in the district, behind both Griswold and A-H-S-T.
The Wolverines will try to keep their playoff hopes alive Friday night when they travel to Avoca to play A-H-S-T.
Corning 34, Villisca 32
The Villisca Blue Jays have now lost five straight games after blowing a lead against Corning. The Blue Jays went into halftime with a 20-0 lead Friday night.
However, Corning rallied in the second half and was able to take the lead and get the win, keeping the Red Raiders playoff hopes alive.
This is the first and only meeting between the two teams in 8-man as they enter their whole grade sharing agreement next school year.
Villisca will be on the road again Friday night when they face Exira-EHK. Corning meanwhile travels to Lenox and will try to knock Lenox out of the fourth place spot in District 8.
