Round-Up: T’Wolves, East Mills win
The Southwest Valley football team scored a big win Friday night when they traveled to Anita to defeat CAM.
The Timberwolves won the game 59-20.
Jordan Stuart had four touchdowns (three rushing and one special teams) as the Timberwolves are now 3-1 in the district (4-1 overall).
Stuart had 24 yards rushing on seven carries. His special teams touchdown came on a 55-yard punt return.
Zach Barton had his second straight 100-yard rushing game as he finished with 142 on 19 carries with two touchdowns.
Preston Fleharty had the other offensive touchdown in the game for Southwest Valley as he scored on a three-yard run.
Defensively, Southwest Valley forced five turnovers, including four interceptions.
Tyler Bissell had the noteworthy interception as he ran one back 40-yards for a touchdown.
The interception was the third this season for Bissell, which leads 8-man District 8.
Gunnar McCuen, Scott Vanderhoof and Nick Spring had the other interceptions for the Timberwolves.
Defensively, Keegan Longabaugh led the way with 14, while Spring had 12, Kal Schmelzer had 11 and Barton finished with 10. Schmelzer also had two sacks in the win.
Southwest Valley will once again be on the road this week when they face the Lenox Tigers. Lenox is coming off of a win against Nishnabotna.
East Mills 37, Westwood 6
The East Mills Wolverines are off to a 4-0 start, picking up their second district win in the process.
Colby Jennings finished with three touchdowns and 135 yards rushing on 19 carries as the Wolverines are 4-0 for the first time since 2011.
Lane Stortenbecker and Cavin Darnold scored the other two touchdowns for East Mills. Stortenbecker carried the ball 10 times for 57 yards, while Darnold had 14 on three carries.
Josh Hopkins didn’t score a rushing touchdown, but contributed to the East Mills ground game by carrying the ball eight times for 79 yards.
Michael Story had another strong defensive game as he finished as East Mills’ leader in tackles with 19.
The Wolverines are on the road Friday night as they take on a Logan-Magnolia team that is fresh off a loss against Riverside.
Boyer Valley 70, Stanton 34
The Stanton Vikings lost their third game in a row on the road versus Boyer Valley.
Kyle Peterson had 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns as Stanton fell to 1-3 overall (0-2 district).
David Sorensen also had two touchdowns (one passing and one special teams). At quarterback, Sorensen finished 10-for-21 for 86 yards as his touchdown pass went to Brady Johnson.
The special teams touchdown for Sorensen came on a kickoff return of 63 yards.
It’s the first kickoff return for a touchdown this season for Sorensen and the team’s third this year. Sorensen returned five kickoffs for 116 yards.
Cade Confer also had a return for a touchdown as he recovered a fumble and returned it 68 yards for a score.
Confer led Stanton in tackles with 14. Alex Becthold had the only other double-digit tackle total as he recorded 13.
It’s homecoming this week for Stanton as they host Fremont-Mills.
A-H-S-T 31, Griswold 21
The Griswold Tigers dropped their first district game of the season Friday night in Avoca versus A-H-S-T.
Griswold stayed close with A-H-S-T, but they pulled away in the fourth quarter to get the win. Two of Griswold’s three running backs finished with more than 100 yards rushing.
Caleb Schaaf led the night as he had 151 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns, including one for 60 yards.
Kenneth Clary was held scoreless, but still carried the ball 30 times for 144 yards. Tyler Muhlbauer came close to the 100-yard rushing mark, but finished with 91 on 15 carries with a touchdown.
Defensively, BJ Schoning led the team in tackles with 13. Morgan Kimpson had 11 and Austin Lorenz finished with 10 tackles.
Quarterback Holden Off threw four passes all game, completing two for 31 yards.
The district loss drops Griswold to fourth in the Class A District 8 standings.
The Tigers are on the road again this Friday when they head north to Sloan to play Westwood.
