Round-Up: Villisca, Stanton fall
After a big week one victory against Stanton, Villisca lost their home opener to the Sidney Cowboys, 64-20.
The Cowboys jumped out to a big first quarter and maintained control from there. Sidney was able to get a running clock going for the second quarter, as well as the second half.
Sidney scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, highlighted by Noah McKeever's touchdown pass on the first play of the first Sidney drive to Jacob Thorne for 54-yards.
Their lead in the first half eventually reached 36-0. Villisca scored their first touchdown of the game late in the first half when Damon Sunderman completed a 15-yard pass to Travis Herzberg. Sunderman ran a bootleg to score the two point conversion and Villisca trailed 36-8.
Sidney scored once more before halftime when McKeever scored on a touchdown pass to himself, courtesy of a deflection by the defense.
McKeever caught the ball on the deflection and ran it 14-yards for the touchdown. Sidney led 43-8 at halftime.
McKeever had another touchdown run of 34-yards to open up Sidney’s second half and make their lead 50-8. Sidney added a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to make the score 58-8.
Villisca was able to score two touchdowns during the fourth quarter. The first score came on a one-yard run by Gunner McCuen.
Sunderman had a 29-yard run a couple plays earlier to set up the scoring opportunity. Villisca trailed 58-14 at that point.
Sidney scored another touchdown to extend their lead over Villisca to 64-14.
The final Blue Jays’ touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Sunderman connected with Max Mauderly on a 11-yard pass.
Villisca hits the road Friday night as they play the Nishnabotna Blue Devils. Nishnabotna is 0-2 and coming off of a 50-14 loss to CAM.
Lenox 56, Stanton 18
The Stanton Vikings fell to 0-2 in their district with their loss to the Lenox Tigers, 56-18.
Cade Confer had a big game for the Vikings as he rushed for a career high 130 yards on 11 carries for two touchdowns, including one for 62-yards.
Kyle Peterson had the other touchdown run as he finished the game with 35 yards on 10 carries.
Jeff Marshall had the most carries for Stanton as he took the ball 24 times and had 81 yards rushing.
For Lenox, Mason Peterson had four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing). Peterson carried the ball 12 times for 120 yards.
Dustyn Rauch also had two touchdowns for the Tigers as he completed his night with 85 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Stanton will be home this week as they face another 0-2 team in the district, the Corning Red Raiders.
East Mills 42, Clarinda Academy 0
Following their week one loss to Shenandoah, East Mills came out Friday night and defeated Clarinda Academy in Clarinda, 42-0.
Colby Jennings had a big game for the Wolverines as he had 114 yards and four rushing touchdowns in the game.
Caleb Barney had the other touchdown run for East Mills, while Gabe Barney caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Austin Sommerla. Sommerla was 4-for-7 for 65 yards.
East Mills is home this Friday night as they play Riverside. Riverside is coming off of a 12-6 win over Shenandoah.
Essex/South Page 47, Corning 36
Essex/South Page is now 2-1 overall for the season following their win over the Red Raiders. ESP jumped out to a lead and held off Corning in the fourth quarter.
Despite the loss, Jordan Stuart still had four touchdowns for Corning. Stuart was 11-for-24 for 120 yards.
Griswold 7, Nodaway Valley 3
Griswold got their record back to .500 when they defeated Nodaway Valley, 7-3. Kenneth Clary's 40-yard touchdown run was the lone touchdown of the game and the Tigers move to 1-1 for the season, as they prepare for districts this week.
Clary was the leading rusher for the game as he carried the ball 22 times for 155 yards. Clary also caught two passes for 19 yards.
Defensively, Clary recorded a sack for Griswold in their win.
Collin Fast was Griswold's leading tackler, finishing with nine (six solo) for the game.
The Tigers are on the road this week to play Underwood and open up the district portion of their season.
