RED OAK — The Stanton Viqueens volleyball team is back in the state tournament after defeating the Corning Red Raiders in the regional final, 3-0, Tuesday night at Red Oak High School.
Stanton jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first game. Corning closed the gap, but they weren't able to overtake the lead as Stanton won the first game 25-21.
The Viqueens took the lead and held off rallies by Corning in the second game to win it 25-19.
Game three would prove to be a see-saw battle. Five lead changes and nine ties took place in game three. Stanton won game three 25-19.
This marks Stanton's second appearance in a state volleyball tournament in school history. Last year, the Viqueens won the quarterfinal match, but lost in the semifinals to Janesville.
Stanton now has a week to prepare for the state tournament, which takes place this year at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. Their quarterfinal match this year will be against Boyden-Hull Nov. 10 at 1:30 p.m.
We'll have much more on this match in the Nov. 8 edition of the Red Oak Express.
