Southwestern CC volleyball season starts this week

CRESTON — Fresh off a national quarterfinals appearance, the Southwestern Community College Spartans are set for a new season of volleyball.

The season for the Spartans kicks off Aug. 19 with the Graceland Scrimmages.

The first Iowa Community College Athletic Conference match takes place in Ottumwa Aug. 26 when SWCC faces off against Indian Hills Community College.

They’re home the next night, Aug. 27, for a match against Des Moines Area Community College.

Other home matches this season will be Sept. 10 versus Kirkwood, Sept. 24 versus Northeast Nebraska Community College, Sept. 29 against Graceland’s junior varsity squad, Oct. 6 against Southeast Nebraska Community College, Oct. 15 versus Clinton Community College, Oct. 21 against Grand View and Oct. 24 versus Highland Community College and Marshalltown Community College.

A familiar face will be playing in the outside hitter position as Stanton High School graduate Carmen Subbert will be one of the key players.

Subbert signed her letter of intent to play with SWCC in the spring.

Joining Subbert at SWCC includes area players Madison Walston, from Bedford and Natali Donahue, who is from Clarinda.

Last season, the Spartans cruised through the regular season and regionals, going 34-9, advancing to the NJCAA Division II Volleyball National Championship tournament.

They lost in the quarterfinals to Oakland, 3-0.
