Sports Calendar: East Mills faces Nodaway Valley for shot at state
The East Mills Wolverines (22-3) have their best opportunity to get into the state tournament as they face off against Nodaway Valley (22-2). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Atlantic High School in the substate 7 pairing.
For East Mills, they won the District 14 bracket, easily defeating Sidney 48-28 in the district final Thursday night in Treynor. They also have early round wins against Essex and A-H-S-T.
Nodaway Valley meanwhile defeated Griswold in the District 13 final 77-42. They have wins against CAM and Earlham.
The state tournament is nothing new to Nodaway Valley. Since 2005, they've made five state tournament appearances, including winning it all in 2006. Their most recent appearance took place last season in Class 2A when they lost their quarterfinal game to Kuemper Catholic, who went on to finish third that year.
Nodaway Valley has several double-digit scorers, most notably TJ Bower. The senior is averaging 20.3 points per game this season. East Mills will also need to contend with Jackson Lamb and Zach Plymesser. Lamb averages 18 points per game, while Plymesser averages 11.2.
The East Mills trio of scorers, Keegan Wederquist, Logan Currin and Jacob Schafer will all be key. All three are averaging at least 10 points per game. They'll also need contributions from Michael Story and Noah Meyer..
With a snowstorm-filled forecast in store for the area this weekend, as of now the game is still on. It is possible that it could change. We'll keep you updated.
There are seven other substate games scheduled for Saturday night in 1A.
In substate 1, Gehlen Catholic takes on West Lyon at Le Mars.
Substate 2 features Gladbrook-Reinbeck taking on Belmond-Klemme at Hampton-Dumont.
Dunkerton and Jesup face off in Independence for the Substate 3 final. In Substate 4, Easton Valley takes on Danville at Iowa City West High School.
Keota and Van Buren, Keosauqua face off in Oskaloosa for the Substate 5 final.
In Substate 6, Lamoni takes on Pleasantville in Indianola.
Finally, Denison serves as the Substate 8 site as Ar-We-Va takes on Newell-Fonda.
Class 2A
The Class 2A substate finals are as follows:
Treynor will face off against Kuemper Catholic in Harlan. West Marshall faces Des Moines Christian in Johnston. St. Edmond takes on South Hamilton at Webster City. MFL MarMac takes on Western Dubuque in Manchester.
New Hampton takes on West Fork in Cedar Falls. North Cedar faces Mount Vernon at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Notre Dame takes on Albia at Ottumwa and Sioux Center takes on Western Christian at MOC-Floyd Valley.
