Sports Calendar: Jan. 6
Here's what is going on around the area in sports for Friday.
Boys Basketball: Red Oak vs. Thomas Jefferson @ Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs- 7:30 p.m.
The Tigers lost to Underwood Thursday night, 53-46 The Tigers stayed close most of the game, but fouls were an issue down the stretch as both Tanner Johnson and Danny Carlson fouled out.
Red Oak won't be the only team entering with a losing streak as Thomas Jefferson has lost four straight. Their most recent loss was Tuesday night to Omaha Northwest 76-35.
Thomas Jefferson will look to Wyatt Fallet and Brian Collinson, who both average 10 points per game.
Red Oak is back in action Monday night as they take part in a varsity doubleheader against Kuemper Catholic in Carroll.
Basketball Doubleheader: Stanton vs. Fremont-Mills @ Fremont-Mills High School- 6 p.m.
It's the first game back for Stanton's basketball teams and both will look to start off hot in January.
Girls
The Viqueens entered the break winning their last three games to reach 4-4. All three of those wins were by 20 points or more over Essex, Riverside and Sidney.
Fremont-Mills meanwhile looks to snap a four game losing streak. Their most recent loss was to Riverside 45-42 on Tuesday.
Macy Williams is the key player to watch for Fremont-Mills. Thanks to Williams' 22 point effort in the game against Riverside, the freshman is now the leading scorer in the Corner Conference, averaging 16.2 points per game.
Boys
The Vikings face a tough task in a Fremont-Mills team that has won eight straight, including against East Mills.
Stanton went into break losing their last two games, including a close loss at home against Sidney.
Fremont-Mills picked up a four-point win over Riverside Tuesday night.
Corey Morrical will be the player to watch for Fremont-Mills. Morrical is the team's leading scorer, averaging 14.1 points per game.
Basketball Doubleheader: Essex vs. Nishnabotna @ Nishnabotna High School- 6 p.m.
Girls
The Trojanettes picked up the 53-23 win over Heartland Christian Thursday night. Cheyana Brownfield scored 18 points and grabbed 15 boards to get the double-double.
Nishnabotna meanwhile is coming off a loss Thursday night to A-H-S-T. They did get the win over Heartland Christian on Tuesday.
Boys
The Trojans also got back in the win column, doing so against Heartland Christian Thursday night, 57-25.
Jordan Jones had a double-double, scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Nishnabotna enters Friday's game with a four game winning streak. Their most recent win was Thursday night against A-H-S-T. They will look to make it five in a row against Essex.
Andrew Thompson will be the player to watch for Nishnabotna. The senior averages 15.5 points per game.
Basketball Doubleheader: East Mills vs. Clarinda Academy @ East Mills High School- 6 p.m.
On the girls side, East Mills lost to Griswold Thursday night, 48-39. They play a Clarinda Academy team that has yet to win a game this season.
For the boys, East Mills got the win over Griswold and will play a Clarinda Academy team that has lost their last two games.
Basketball Doubleheader: Griswold vs. Underwood @ Griswold High School- 6 p.m.
The Griswold girls picked up their second win of the season Thursday night against East Mills. They play an Underwood team that won its first six games, but since then they have lost four straight.
Griswold's boys team meanwhile plays an Underwood team that defeated Red Oak on Thursday night.
